Where did the word "Sheeeeesh" come from? I often hear it on twitch streams i watch

Anyway saying what you type in my head it sounds like a zoomer version of geeze, like gee wiz, oh come on, for crying out loud

Pretty sure 1955 predates zoomers by a lil bit.

It is indeed surprise and a couple other things, tis just an average interjection.

To elaborate on what others have said: the English language has a long history of changing large, often religious expressions into ones that are either more convenient to say or less offensive to some. A few other examples:

 

Goodbye = God be by (or with) ye

Zounds = God's wounds

Egads = Oh God

Cripes = Christ

 

You get the idea. "Sheesh" is basically the religious equivalent of yelling "fudge."
