How to set up a 165mz Gsync compatible monitor properly?

Mark Kaine

I must say I'm a bit confused about these options - I have 60, 120, 165hz... and what if I want to play at 144hz, or rather 'variable refesh rate' should I just leave it at 165hz?

and the other settings like Max framerate etc, default?

Gsync is on by default, and Vsync was also on so I turned that off, correct?

lastly no matter what Windows will always say 1hz below what I actually set in NVCP, so for 165hz it says 164hz, and so on, even 60hz it'll say '59hz'... why the discrepancy, and is there a fix?

for the record on my old 60hz monitor windows actually showed '60hz', tho there was options for 50hz and 59hz also, but I don't see them now.

Ok, GSync (which I've been using on a PG348Q since 2017) is pretty great. You can set the monitor to 165Hz, then if the game is running at 165FPS or below, GSync will be active. (There is a bottom limit to how low but its low enough that if you're down there you have bigger problems).

Now, its pretty common practice with GSync panels to limit your frames in game or using the new options in the Nvidia Control Panel so your game is always in GSync which smooths everything out and eliminates any screen tearing.

Regarding V-Sync, you'll get a lot of mixed opinions on this one when it comes to how it interacts with GSync.

I can just tell you want my experience has been using a true GSync panel for the last 4 years every day. I leave V-Sync off and cap my frames to 1-2FPS under my displays maximum refresh rate (in my instance, that's 98FPS for my 100Hz panel) and things are buttery smooth all the time as this keeps GSync always active.

The discrepancies in your refresh rate being off by one, I wouldn't worry too much about that? Maybe someone else can chime in.

I agree with @rickeoon all points. BlurBusters indicated V-Sync on in the Nvidia control panel helps with frame pacing even when G-Sync is active (keep it off in the in-game settings though). I run it on in the NVCP, but don't know if I really notice a difference on/off.

My Windows display settings also shows 1 Hz below monitor refresh rate, cuz Windows is strange.

if Gsync is on, playing at 144fps even though your monitor is set to 165hz would run the monitor at 144hz

i dont cap my fps as i dont mind it going higher (going higher than 165hz is VERY rare anyways)

but if i were to cap, i would use software cap instead of vsync (rivatuner statistic server is useful for this is your game doesnt support in-game fps cap)

just minor stuff, dont worry about it

the number can sometimes be slightly off

not like you can tell if the number isnt there anyways 😛

This capability is now directly in the Nvidia Control Panel. So happy about that.

Ok, I see. Well as said I set it to 120 now, will test with it set to 165 in a bit for comparison, Vsync is off, can test that later too, and so far there's no screen tearing and the game feels somehow snappier - tho that could really be a placebo effect because Afterburner shows pretty much the same frametimes, though they might be more consistent, I gotta check that...

*This* game is also limited to 60fps in game because everything relies on it, damage, AI, etc (it's a thing many Japanese games like to do)

But still a good test though - and yeah, there's no screen tearing whatsoever.

Thanks for the answers, I guess I set it mostly right - and I'll test 1-2 frames under maximum when I actually play a game that gets over or close to 165fps (which won't be many lol, but realistically there are lots that would run at around 120fps for sure)

yeah, exactly... most games don't go that high anyways - at least with high settings which I definitely prefer over high fps...

yeah so far I'm not noticing anything 😄 it's just a weird thing I noticed in the settings.

[whisper] mhw actually is better at 120fps, if you can keep it locked there [/whisper]

lol... I knew you'd say that. : p

do you get double damage like in Resident Evil 2 or...? 😯

Anyway last time I tried (on my 60hz) monitor ~100 fps was all I got, but I set pretty much anything to max.

I was actually thinking about trying that with Gsync, in theory it should smooth things out, but I don't know if its gonna glitch out Nergigante too with a irregular framerate like that? 🤔

(going to definitely abuse this in Resident Evil though lol)

you get slightly shorter iframes but your actions are shorter

and for pew pew, the piercing ammo tick rate is higher

and like others, faster animation = faster reload + firing rate

Ah ok, so it's kinda like RE2... (afaik it's only knife damage there, which is rather big for bosses and such)

So you think it would be ok at 100 fps too or would that mess things up?

mess things up no

for non-gun, higher fps = shorter animation (and shorter iframes) so it's never a minus

but for gunner, only multiples of 30 or smth is good iirc -digs-

oh and safi + resentment likes high fps

ahhh figures! interesting...

well, I'm using tick rate fix mod, I'd need to take that off obviously (probably)

but thanks, definitely going to try that...!

I gotta say this monitor is really cool, things are a lot sharper - more defined... I thought it wouldn't be a big difference to Nvidia DSR, but it is.

Oh, I figured out why I can't set it to 144hz... it only works over hdmi?

Seems like a weird limitation (and then 165hz is only working with dp/usb)  🤔
