Should I go to Micro Center?

ConnorSt

So I live in Louisville Kentucky and the closest Micro Center is 2 hours away (one way, not round trip). At the current moment, I don't need to get anything for my computer or my 3D printer, but I have a couple days off from college coming up and I was thinking about going as I've never been there before and who knows maybe I'll find something I need or a great deal on 3D printer filament. My main question is, is Micro Center worth it? Like are the prices really good? Or do you think it'd be a good day trip and not something to do every time I need some filament?

Maybe I should just go for a little day trip away from college? What are everyone's thoughts?

From time to time, yes, Micro Center is worth it. They are pretty competitive with price matching a competitor (Amazon, Newegg, Best Buy), but check their policies on price matching. My parents and I like to go out on a road trip to PA, where there is a Micro Center located out there. USB thumb drives are pretty cheap and can't believe how much I get ripped off at other stores. Micro Center tends to sell their CPUs pretty cheap to get you in the door and buy other components. Their return policy is great if something doesn't work out right and need to exchange the item.

A 2 hour drive is pretty far, consider spending the whole day there or in the area once you consider it to be a 4 hours round trip and maybe an hour inside the store.

These questions are great. Should I do this thing? Well I don't know, do you want to do that thing?

If there isn't a specific item or items you want that they are selling for a good price and which you can reserve online to have some certainty they won't be out of stock before you make the trip, no. It's not a theme park. It's just a store, and a rather dingy and old-feeling one at that (at least all the locations I've ever been in were).

Alternatively: do what you want, we're not your dad!

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

my closest micro center is the one in Tustin, CA 2.5 hours each way, and ya gotta add LA traffic to that sometimes. So i feel your dilemma. The first time i went there is was like damn what else has my life been missing? I now like to go there because I'll see something and be like "yeah i need that" which is something you don't get on amazon or Newegg. I don't mean useless crap i mean like a fan header or a water cooler part.

Also with the recent lack of computer parts available i have gone down there a few times trying to score something. I was there a week ago got in as number 50 and there was 2x MSI RX6800 still available, but i only want the merc 319 so i passed on it. I'll prob go down there again in a few days to try and score a 5900x.

If you have some free time I'd recommend you go there at least once just to see how massive the store is and all the crazy amounts of stuff they sell.

What else would you do with that 6 hours?  2 ther 2 at, 2 back) Something better?  If not it won’t hurt anything. Is there anyplace else in that area you want to see or do? Might be worth checking.  Microcenters are generally in large cities.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

I'd say no. It's just a computer store. Like Best Buy back in the day before they became whatever they are now. Like A Wallmart with computer parts. IT's not like an Apple Store which is a fancy "try stuff" store. Spend the 6ish hours playing a game or something.. pc builder simulator if you need to look at pc parts 🙂
