US-based chip designer and producer NVIDIA Corporation (NVIDIA) plans to purchase the Intellectual Property Group business of UK-based Arm Limited (Arm) in a deal worth $40 billion. Arm develops and licenses intellectual property (IP) and software tools for chip designs. The products and services supplied by the companies support a wide range of applications used by businesses and consumers across the UK, including desktop computers and mobile devices, game consoles and vehicle computer systems.

 

The CMA will look at the deal’s possible effect on competition in the UK. The CMA is likely to consider whether, following the takeover, Arm has an incentive to withdraw, raise prices or reduce the quality of its IP licensing services to NVIDIA’s rivals.

 

My thoughts

I don't think this investigation is going to be a surprise to anyone. Right now they're just open for comment from companies that may be affected by this deal with the full formal investigation taking place sometime after, with a date not yet set.

Nvidia buying ARM is going to be a huge deal ($40B) for the industry and there's definitely a lot of parties involved with ARM that such a deal could affect, such as Apple who now rely on ARM based processors in their new devices.

 

Potentially the deal could be blocked from going ahead.

 

I think it's too early to call whether or not it would be blocked. If it is blocked who would ARM sell to?

I could go off on a full political rant here but I'm going to restrain myself.

 

The motives behind this are political, not business. The UK Govt. is terrified that losing ARM will spell the end of the UKs CPU development & manufacturing interests and put us behind the rest of the western world in that regard.

 

Losing ARM is a big deal to them, we have no other significant horses left in the race.

 

Also anyone else find the timing of this to be very coincidental? The deal was approved last year and nobody said anything at the time then within weeks of Apple taking ARM to places where it was previously unused and further cementing ARMs place as a dominant name for the foreseeable future, suddenly the Govt. in interested in shutting the deal down.

 

TBC I'm actually not saying I disagree, losing ARM would be a significant blow to the UK.

Nvidia looks at this as a business decision and not one through the lenses of international politics. Besides, RISC-V. That's the future as it's royalty free. UK should focus on that IMHO as they can get ahead of the curve.

The UK doesn't want to fall behind further the USA and it wants to develop more big tech companies in the uk so losing arm would be huge and the government what i have heard will probably block the deal so arm remains ownership of a british company

Arm is currently owned by Softbank, a Japanese company. Arm is based and operates in the UK. Nvidia has said that when (if) the plan goes through they intend to keep arm headquartered in the UK.

Oh ok I didn't know thanks, but even if nvidia buy them I think they will still be reluctant due to it being american and arm's huge presence suddenly in the computer market

No surprise that deals like this will be examined. It is part of business. Possible impact will be considered, and while a block is certainly possible, there are lesser requirements such as imposing certain conditions to allow it to go through.

The UK Government should view ARM as a strategic asset and protect it as such.  See what the US did with regard to TSMC since they were going to cause them deep issues with the China-US problems. This stuff matters. There's a reason why US Interests would be very big on the idea of Nvidia acquiring ARM, and the reason reasons UK Interests should be against it. Its the same set of reasons China forces "Joint Ventures", which really work out as "let us steal all of your technology" ventures. 

 

It's the Grand Game and we just want reasonably priced GPUs.

i thought a bit about whats the difference between nvidia and softbank and came up with this. softbank is an investment firm so if arm does well then it adds value for them so their interests are largely aligned. that might not be the case for nvidia. nvidia might have an interest in restricting arm from selling to certain competitors which would be bad for arm
