Upgrade from 1080Ti to RTX 3070?

Fuzzyy
Go to solution Solved by Fuzzyy,

Just ordered an EVGA 3070 XC3 ULTRA, I will compare the cards when I get the 3070.

I have the MSi 1080Ti Armor card, watercooled with kraken g12 and kraken X52. It was enough for me until I decided to buy Cyberpunk 2077. Now I am worried of getting less than 80 FPS. I game on a 1440p 144hz monitor, and I always play on Ultra settings. I don't know how much FPS I'm going to get on cyberpunk, but it feels like I should upgrade. RTX is a whole different story and I really want to experience it too but its my second concern at the moment. I can go buy a EVGA 3070 XC3 from a local retailer tomorrow, should I do it? Will it be a great upgrade in case of raw 1440p performance(without RTX)? Current system specs are on my signature.

If you have the chance to get one and you know your system can handle it then I would go for it, honestly. Then you could sell the 1080 on eBay for some extra money.

I am with 1080ti at 1440p 165Hz and I am absolutely sure that a 2080ti/3070 is not a worthwhile upgrade.

Yes, you wont run Ultra at 1440p but who cares? Most of the Ultra settings are useless anyways, I am sure you can get a great visual fidelity if you tweak settings and get 80+ FPS.

Why worry now? You can always upgrade later when it's not enough, instead of speculating that it's not enough

I got scared by looking at the system requirements. In this table i am between "High" and "Ultra" considering the 1080ti is faster than 5700XT and slightly slower than a 2080super. I really don't enjoy games below 80-90FPS. With the upgrade, I can benefit from ray tracing and DLSS 2.0, but don't know if they are worth. I feel like I have a short time because the game comes out in 2 days and the cards may be unavailable again.

That was my exact plan. I live in a country that 1080Ti's go for around 380-400 USD and the 3070 is around 900-1000USD because of taxes.

Thats even more reason to not upgrade. 3070 is not worth it that much... not even close.

And you claim that you need 80+FPS and you also think you will be able to achieve that with RT? Even with DLSS on Ultra... good luck.

i have both a 1080 ti on my ancient rig + a 2080 ti (basically a 3070) on my current one, i'm 100% sure the upgrade isn't worth it.

none of the cards are good enough to max stuff out atm, don't believe the hype.

Here is the difference in the performance between my GTX 1080 ti and RTX 2080 ti using a 6 core Intel CPU.

This is Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1440p on the highest preset with TAA. Notice that the 1080 ti is GPU bound and the 2080 ti is CPU bound.  3070/2080 ti  performance is worth having in my view,

Yeah but turn on ray tracing and it'll take a huge dump

Though, not that 1080ti can do it to begin with

Anyways, worth it not is up to op, it's about a 20-30% performance jump? Though still not sure how cyberpunk will run on it on maxed settings, we'll see

I think i will take the risk the cards running out of stock and play the game first with my current rig. Will also watch benchmarks of how an RTX 3070 performs with DLSS 2.0 with and without RTX.

I’d upgrade myself. If they were available I’d already have one in preparation for a water block.
Not much headroom left on my cpu but that’s a risk I’ll take for now.

Well in Turkey cards here are so damn expensive, for example an EVGA 3070 XC3 Ultra is three times more than the minimum wage. So people can't eat out the stock fast enough :) There are plenty of cards in stock.

Heh, same case here

But yea, waiting for benchmarks to see if it's worth upgrading or not seems like the best route to move forward

SOTTR with TR on ultra I did 78 frames average at 1440p. I test at ultra but I don't play at ultra so getting higher frames it not hard.

I am a 4k gamer so having to drop down to 1440p for ray tracing is a pain but if the game looks better with it I will do it.

Well, I get 60-80 FPS on 2560x1440, Medium Preset. I guess I'll just go and buy the 3070, and run the game with DLSS at Ultra ,no RT tho.
