I got my new laptop... Now what?

Warning (kind of): I know this question can be google searched, but I wanted more human answers and related to my specs. 

So I just got my new laptop, specs in profile. 

Anything you guys do when starting a new machine except for antivirus and driver updates?

HP eq0024au 

Ryzen 5 3500U

8gb ram

512GB SSD

1080p 15.6" Display.
Windows 10

MS office included

With a month of Mc Afee

Reinstall windows, get rid of all the OEM bloatware

 

Get rid of that McAfee crud

McAfee is almost equivalent to nothing.

- remove preinstalled bloatware, especially antivirus.

- update windows and drivers.

- install AMD Ryzen Master and Radeon software

- install steam, epic store.

- install office, photo editor etc

- run 3dmark, geekbench etc.

- install chrome or firefox

- login to LTT

I would do all the above, plus get more RAM. 

 

what do you plan on doing with the laptop???

 

Also get a nice protective sleeve/bag for it when you use it on the go. 

 

And if you don't use it on the go, then why did you buy a laptop????

That's arguably in the same boat as McAfee. Use Malwarebytes and the built in defender

I'd mainly ensure you have all the apps and utilities that you need. Consider how you'll lay out your desktop (icons, taskbar, wallpaper, that sort of thing).

 

I have to admit: it's a bit amusing as a Mac user to see people talk about how you 'need' to reinstall the OS, remove bloatware and update drivers to get started. With a Mac, you just... start using the computer. Admittedly things have gotten better now that Edge is finally a good browser, but it's weird the things we accept as 'normal' on non-Apple computers.
