What's the perfect sweet spot in inches and value for a 4K TV?

I haven't had a TV in a few years but moving into a new place and will need a TV for visitors. I still will use it once or twice a week. 

 

I am thinking of buying a 75" TV for like £900 - £1,200 which I think is a good price considering I paid £1,200 for only a 55" 4K TV about 4 years ago (I no longer have it.) This is mainly to show off, but also for viewing movies with side bitches. The problem is that TV's depreciate like crazy and i'm thinking of just going back to 55" which I can pick up brand new for around £500. It will be a bluechip brand (Samsung or LG probably)

 

What size should I buy?

 

I will be using it to watch the main free UK channels and streaming services like Netflix etc.

I'd say it depends more on the space. A 75" TV might be too big; it requires a very large room.

Not sure why depreciation would factor in. It's a TV, not a car.

Yeah but it will be a large room.

 

Well the prices on them just drop like crazy. Honestly, like I said the LG 55" TV I bought in 2016 for around £1,200 from Currys can now be bought for just £500.

That's because technology advances quickly and becomes more affordable. You can't really stop that from happening.

That happens with pretty much anything tech related. Looking at depreciation doesn't make much sense with a TV, it's only 700 pound. It's really not that much.

No one has ever complained that their TV is too big.

 

And yeah if you are that worried about depreciation on electronics then you probably shouldn't buy anything.

I have complained my tv was too big. Got a nice lg 55 inch 4k on sale for 300 but then was like oh this is far too big for how far I sit from it :p.

I imagine there is probably a certain point / size where the 4K doesn't look as good as it's meant to be.

Last year for Black Friday I did extensive research on this very thing. So this info is about a year old, however I doubt much has changed as most manufactures are keeping many things the same due to how covid has affected their business. 

 

65-55" (LCD) was the sweet spot in terms of $ / Inch for a few years. However during the summer of 2019 the panel manufacturing process standardized 75" even further. This is a expensive and time consuming process as they need to change all the tooling to cut large sheets into the exact panel sizes. Meaning the cost for those panels significantly dropped. I'm not sure that 75" panels are the beast value in term of $ / Inch, however it would be very close now to a 65" panel, vs early 2019. 

 

I ended up paying a slight premium for features I wanted Like HDR 10, Dolby Vision + Atmos, Native 120Hz, IPS, and a good remote, but the Black Friday deal was still very significant (around $800 off) and I only had to spend $150 more than other 75" 4k LCD TVs, which lacked some of those key features. I was willing to do so as I will keep this TV for many years, likely 5+. 

 

Now I did go LCD (with IPS), however this is where things change in terms of $ / Inch. 75" OLED or QLED TV's are not massed produced by any means. If you want that panel tech 55" still seems to be the best value (I quickly looked at local pricing). As the pricing jump from a 65" to 75" is about $2-3k, where as the pricing difference between a 55" to 65" is about $800-1,200.

 

I went for panel size over OLED as I had a large wall to place it on and personally I value screen size well above having OLED. And with the features my TV has the image quality is still amazing, especially if you are viewing true 4K content, Dolby Vision or HDR just make it that much better. 80"+ (LCD) still comes at a larger premium, so not nearly as good value.

 

I got the LG 75UM8070PUA and I am extremely happy with it. And based on pricing here in Canada, 75" would be the largest you can go without having to spend a significant amount more, this said Black Friday is fast approaching so there may be good deals to be found with some of these 80"+ panels.

You are not going to reach that point with any TV. Movie theaters use 2K projectors on 80 foot screens.

 

How close are you planning to sit?
