Am I crazy or is the mass 1.2 kilograms? Is this a trick question?

I misread, the diagram is not related to this question

 

which makes it even easier. 5kg mass over the side, with gravity pulling it, 24 newtons of friction in the opposite direction. two step problem.

That's what the question is asking you.

Start by drawing the system, and the individual Free Body Diagrams.

You find the delta in velocity (v1-v2). Then divide it by the time to get acceleration a=v/s . Then F=ma.

 

Or you do it through Impulse.

Which is Delta Velocity times mass is equal to Force times time. Vm = Ft

For b.

There are several different ways to do this

 

You can use the formula displacement is equal to (initial velocity plus final velocity) divided by two times time. d = ((v1+v2)/2)*t

6a: You need to calculate deceleration rate first, you have change in velocity and time so that's easy. How much force do you need to slow down something at that rate and mass?

 

6b: Find average velocity and you'll get the answer in no time.

I have accélération so I just need to find the mass of it after using friction?
