Surely any NVMe M.2 SSD should work in a PS5??

Guest

If PS5 expansion slot is for nvme m.2 surely any nvme m.2 ssd will fit in there?

And if any nvme m.2 fits in there then why wouldn't it work, do PS require some special formatting or something?

And if PS require some special formatting wouldn't it be possible to format any nvme m.2 with the appropriate format?

I haven't looked that closely, but I think only 2280 - size ones are suitable.

Both PS3 and PS4 use their own filesystems, so yes, it's entirely likely PS5 will also use "special formatting." What filesystem one uses is irrelevant wrt. to what NVMe-drive one can use, though; the drives do not give a flying fuck about what stuff you have there or how it's laid out.

It's not even out yet, how are we supposed to know this?

Well firstly, PS5 is in the wild, people have them.

Secondly, Western Digital have already said its SN850 is PS5 compatible. There's nothing proprietary about that drive, it is a PCIe Gen 4 m.2 NVMe SSD.

My thinking is that I should be able to put any PCIe Gen 4 m.2 NVMe SSD into the PS5 and at least on a hardware level it will be compatible.

I am guessing there will be some Sony specific formatting required but I am wondering if the PS5 will do that formatting for you when you insert the drive or if it needs to be formatted before inserting.

WD Black PCIe Gen 4 m.2 2280 nvme SN850 500GB "PS5 Compatible" = £130

Sabrent 1TB Rocket Nvme PCIe 4.0 M.2 2280 = £127

the list goes on

We don't know if they will put specific limits on what works or not. My only guess at this point is they want a minimum level of performance. If you can use slower, perhaps with a warning, or a hard requirement remains to be seen.

Gaming system: R7 7800X3D, Asus ROG Strix B650E-F Gaming Wifi, Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE ARGB, Corsair Vengeance 2x 32GB 6000C30, RTX 4070, MSI MPG A850G, Fractal Design North, Samsung 990 Pro 2TB, Acer Predator XB241YU 24" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync + HP LP2475w 24" 1200p 60Hz wide gamut

I believe it must be gen 4 in order to play games directly from the storage, anything slower can be used to store media and save games Eg. USB Hard Drive

Correct me of im wrong, but looking at the ps5 teardown video the storage appered to be soldered directly on the "motherboard" .

We dont really know much at this point, i guess, except that we can mock it for being slow and not upgradeable in a few years xD

There is some included with the system but understood there will also be upgrade potential. It doesn't follow that to upgrade you need to remove what was included.

There is an expandable storage port under a panel. They showed it in the tear down. Western Digital have already declared their SN850 as PS5 compatible but you can get other PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 SSDs for half the price of the WD

I think the main requirement is PCIe gen 4.  I would expect Sony to validate drives for compatibility, and recommend sticking to those drives.

And herein lies the issue. The Sabrent 1TB PCIE 4.0 SSD is actually around £190. The PCIE 3.0 version is about £130.

At time of posting the pice 4.0 rocket was £127 on Amazon, it is now £169 but there are other options for way less than the "PS5 Compatible" SN850.

You can't have one that needs a heatsink for the PS5 though

why not? The announced compatible WD Black SN850 comes with or without a heatsink and as far as I can see both are compatible

We'll see but personally more a fan of the XSX and it's hot swappable, tool less storage.

I'm guessing the BIOS on the PS5 will be locked down to only accept "approved" ssds.

Crappy? yes. but better than proprietary form factors.

Maybe maybe not I believe the PCIe Gen4 requirements are mostly to hit performance targets a crappy gen4 QLC drive might not even hit the speed target to get certified ...
