I have, and it worked. If you can't it's simply because you're too closed minded :)

I am not close minded, You are extremely rude.

I had to deal with this sort of shit for 3 years EVERYDAY. I know what its like trying to teach someone who just doesnt want to learn. Not juat one person per day... think like at least 20 people per 5 days of the week for 3 years.

So many old people have no desire to learn and are more interested in going around saying how stupid and dumb they are and using that as their way to hand their problem off to someone else.

Thats how a lot of customers would initiate contact with us, by saying "Hi, Just another dumb old person here with a stupid question". They believed that they couldnt learn and put up their own barriers.

If all those solutions fail, maybe try Linux if he is doing minimal stuff on the Internet. Some of them look like Windows and if he is used to Firefox or another third party, it probably exist on it so it won't mess with his habits too much.

adblock is probably a start, as well as teaching him...or just leaving

Ad-block Plus is a good start. Also make sure an email spam filter is installed. And a strong anti-virus suite (Avast Pro, BitDefender, or Kaspersky are some good choices). Ones that have both a Web browser plugin AND an email scanner are both valuable in his situation.

Next would be to max up UAC to most sensitive levels, to help combat viruses that do sneak on from gaining admin privileges.

Disable or uninstall Java. It's a major exploit that many viruses use.

A popup blocker would also be good.

Finally, education is the last defence. Teach him what he's doing wrong and show him how to do better. But remember not to talk down to him. He probably didn't have access to computers growing up, so it's a daunting and unfamiliar technology that can make him feel stupid if challenged.

This is the best advice.. you could also look into creating a seperate account for him and locking it down as much as possible, especially so he can't run exe's etc etc..

Saying that is just as closed minded as saying an old person can't learn.

Not really. There are lots of people that don't try to teach someone, or give it a very half assed effort because they think they won't learn it anyway.

Anyone can learn.

I honestly don't care what you think I am.

If it was such a pain maybe you should have changed jobs.

There are just as many old people who are excited and more than willing to learn.

Reinstall Windows and put nothing but a basic setup like drivers and vmware then use a virtual machine and let him toy around in there if he ever gets a virus just restart the virtual machine and its gone.

You're side-stepping the point here.

The point is not that many old people can and will learn, but rather that there are old people who will refuse to learn. Sure, there are lots of half assed teachers out there when it comes to elderly students, but that's also not the point. You're automatically assuming that he's being a lazy ass or is closed minded without even taking into consideration that maybe his student (his father) just doesn't want to learn. It happens. These people exist.

And frankly you were rude to him. And you should care, because being rude is definitely against Forum ToS. You don't have to be an ass about it.

I'm an extremely patient person and have worked with elderly people learning computers myself, and yes many of them can learn or just need the correct motivation, but there are also others who will just be ignorant, won't listen, or will be half assed about it themselves.

Saying "Not really. There are lots of people that don't try to teach someone, or give it a very half assed effort because they think they won't learn it anyway. Anyone can learn." is a cop-out argument. Yes anyone can learn. If they want to. And plenty don't. Just like there are plenty of young or middle aged people that don't want to learn. If they don't want to learn, you won't be able to make them. They have to be open to the idea of learning new things, otherwise they'll come up with excuse after excuse for failure. Maybe some genius motivational/charismatic inspirational coach can get through to these people, but the rest of us have to deal with the practicalities of life.

Speaking as an older person I can tell you right now there are easily just as many (if not more) arrogant young shits that can't learn because they think they already know it all than there are old people who refuse to learn because of a deficit view of themselves.

We are all human and all have about the same ability to learn, age has nothing to do with it.  If you have had trouble teaching people something after 3 years full time I would suggest you are probably not a very good educator.

Have you ever tried to explain a problem to an ignorant old person? I used to do that as a job... explaining doesnt work. Like ever... You just need to fix the problem and tell them its all going to be ok.

Al ya got at do folks, is yell whatever ya gotta say really loud. The louder, the better. Gets drilled into their head, unless of course, they're partially or fully deaf. Then ya gotta resort to other ways of "explanations" :)

Maybe installing Chrome OS would be a good idea, lightweight Linux backend so no viruses (well, practically none) and he can still write all the word docs 'n' spreadsheets he desires :)

You cant teach someone who doesnt want to learn. Period. Stop having a go at me just because I know what its like in the real world. Go out into a job and find out how difficult it is for yourself.

Ha haha, it's like you think I haven't spent the last 20 years in the real world educating people on the job.

you were the one that generalized about old people being unable to learn and how you couldn't do it even though you tried for 3 years.  If you don't want it to be personal, don't try to publicly blame old people for your failures.

Let's keep this discussion civil, gentlemen. It is a discussion, not an argument.

In regards to what Night said, "You cant teach someone who doesnt want to learn", I agree to an extent that it is very difficult to inspire the want to learn about new technology in the generally older population. That said, I have successfully taught a 70-year-old how to use a computer better than most people my age (20), so it is not impossible.

All it takes is them wanting to learn, at least to some degree - but that is a requirement for any type of teaching. I think it's fair to say that from my experience, and apparently Night's as well, most of the older population aren't interested in learning the subtleties of new technology. Not saying all of them, and only saying the majority from what I personally have observed.
