Scared to install RTX 2080 Super

So I was lucky and got hands on a very affordable ASUS GeForce RTX 2080S ROG Strix O8G Gaming. It cost me about 150$ less than usual and I know you might think what a bad time to buy a 2080S just when the new 30-series might be available in stores but in my country I usually have to wait for another month or two and the 3070 isn't even out yet so this could have lasted until December or something. (and a 3080 would be overkill because I'm playing 1080p)

Soo... I just recently RMA'ed a 2070 Super also of ASUS ROG because it had immense coil whining. I talked with ASUS support and they told me it's the card and I should RMA it. I also just recently bought an ASUS ROG motherboard so that should not cause any problem at all. So I RMA'ed it and they gave me the money back because they didn't have any card aveilable... So I was stuck with my old GTX 1060 and really wanted a better card so I found this nice offer of about 700$. (yes I know it's still much but Switzerland usually has prices up to 950$ for a 2080 Super so I took the deal)

But... As I opened the glass pane of the PC while it was running I heared a very very very silent coil whine from the 1060. I never heared it before when I was playing on it a while ago for several years but it was here now... Might have been here since the beginning but now I noticed it. So I got sceptical and started Minecraft with Shaders, stood to a wall and let the Frames spike to about 150FPS. I could hear the coil whine better now. Not comparable with the 2070 Super tho... This thing was blasting the noise right at my ears even with the glass pane on it.

Now I kind of guess it could also be the PSU. I have a CoolerMaster MWE Bronze 650 and I also said that to the ASUS support but they didn't even consider it being the cause because the noise clearly comes from the graphics card and not from the PSU. But it kind of makes me wonder if maybe I should better upgrade to a ASUS ROG-STRIX-750G instead? It's a bit expensive but I'd do anything if the coil whine goes away.

Now to my most important question: Can a PSU make permanent damage to a Graphics Card so that it has coil whine forever? I mean... I haven't installed the 2080 Super yet but I'd really like to. But if you guys think this could damage the card and then it whines forever after and I should better get an expensive PSU first then I should probably listen to you. Does anyone know more?

Coil whine can develop or go away over time during use, no matter the PSU's good or not. Just bad luck

Coil whine is not a disease your hardware can contract from other hardware:) Some gpu's will whine, others won't.

Coil whine is a combination of PSU and what draws power, so yes it can very much have to do with the PSU.

The fact a card makes coil whine won't damage it.

That model is ~$740 (679CHF) new, in stock with 2 years warranty so it wasn't a good deal, can even find used ones at 599CHF.

That's the exact deal I got at digitec.ch.
Sorry if I told this wrong in the first place. It's a brand new card and I haven't even opened yet.
So is this still a bad deal or is that better like this?

Okey... So if I insert the card and it still whines and then I replace my PSU it might go away?

Coil whine is normal and if you have it, it doesn't mean your components (in this case, your graphics card) is or will get damaged. A better PSU may improve the whine (as in lessen it), but it's not a given.

If it's the MWE Bronze v1 that you're using and not the v2, I can imagine that it'll start whining with higher power GPUs (like potentially the 2080 Super) because of its double forward topology.

Also, I really don't get your obsession, so to speak, with ROG. Brand doesn't mean quality, if that's what you're going by.

I wouldn't get the Strix 750W, since there are better units out there for the money.

RDNA2 and the RTX 3070 will be out in about a month from now. You can keep it if you want and absolutely cannot wait that long for an upgrade, but it doesn't change the fact that you'll be able to get more performance for less money in a little while.

OK perfect then, sounded like you had bought a used one, would not have been interesting.

But it's not a "good deal", it's just normal price :)

If it's the MWE Bronze v1

@MateyyyIt only sais "MWE Bronze 650" on the front of the package so I suppose it's the v1? Pretty sure it's this one: coolermaster.com

True... It's because it looks nice if a lot of things are from the same brand (it's glass) but with the PSU I could go wild because in the Sharkoon TG5 I have you don't see the PSU.

I just supposed it's good if you have all from the same brand.

True... But it's only about 14$ more expensive and with 750W I still have a bit of room (not that I really need it but I don't really look at price tags. I want good things)

The Strix looks to be more expensive than Corsair's HX750 and RM750i:

..both of which I'd take over the Strix any day of the week.

I'd get the RMi, even if only for the digital monitoring. I feel like it's a bigger bonus over the very marginal efficiency and performance advantage of the HX.

So yea... I installed the 2080S and the coil whining is even worse than it was with the 2070S.

But one more thing now appears: If I really push the card to the max with Benchmarks and then stop benchmarking the CoolerMaster PSU creates a weird humming noise that fades away after about 30 seconds.
Definitively going to change that PSU asap.

digital monitoring

This is going to be the game changer for me... I always wanted to see the exact amount of power I am consuming... Why isn't that standard anyways?
Will this be available via the iCUE software or are there also other programs that can read the PSU watts?

And btw... I was just in time getting that 2080S @Kilrah! Now the price is back to normal (Switzerland price of ~885$) digitec.ch

I think the monitoring is done through Corsair Link, as opposed to iCUE.

Oh... So can I install both programs without them interfering each other? Aren't they both supposed to change RGB colors and stuff?
