4k Gaming Rig. AA needed?

So, I have a friend who wants my help in setting him up with a new computer. He's dead set on 4k. He won't be swayed from its goodness.

I found this benchmark with SLI Titan Black's, which is likely what we'll go with.

My question is, the benchmarks are shown with 4x MSAA. I've read a few places that you can skip out on AA at high resolutions, is this true? And is AA the same as MSAA?

If you were to run a game without it, I'm assuming there would be even better performance.
The only game I see of issue in this set is Crysis 3 @ 31 fps.

I'm not really looking for any build help, as I have a good grasp on the rest and there isn't really a budget.

MSAA is really stupid at higher than 1080p. 2x MSAA at 1080p has it render the game at 4k in the first place, so that's a good benchmark on performance.. In general, you won't need to use AA at 4k for the most part, especially MSAA.

MSAA is a type of AA.

At such a high resolution, jaggies aren't much of a problem. I'd go without AA. And yes, no AA means less for the GPU to process meaning better performance.

at OP: It depends, if you see the staircase effect etc then turn AA on.

The Titan Blacks are a massive improvement over the 780Ti's at 4k though.

Thanks! Kind of figured that was the case. He'll definitely be pleased. Now I just have to try and convince him to hold out for Maxwell and the Kingston Predator.

If you still want some AA benefits but don't have the muscle for MSAA then FXAA can get you a lot for almost free since It's done post process. Though sometimes it can blur things a bit.

I don't think it'd be a huuuge issue (the blur) at 4k. Probably not even noticeable if you factor in the lower monitor response time.

I hope for his sake they have some better monitors out by the time he wants to build.

According to some other early adopters you need somewhat less anti aliasing but you still need it. Until we reach about 12000p pixels will still be individually resolvable by the eye (on this scale 4k is actually just 2.5p). But they have been saying they were happy with msaa 2x where 4x had previously been necessary.

I dont use AA at 1920x1200, i dont see why you would at 4K, I think AA will die as we get more higher pixel density monitors.

Good to know. Dropping from 4x to 2x would give what....approximately 2 fps gain maybe?

Once we get to 21333x12000 then you can do without AA completely, it should look pretty real at that point as well.
