Preparing for the new Nvidia 3000 series cards

Tearitup

Hey guys!

I plan on picking up the RTX 3070 as soon as preorders for it go live. I want to also upgrade my power supply as part of this cycle of upgrades. Would you recommend I go ahead and pick one up or wait until I have purchased the card?

I am looking to buy this unit directly from EVGA's website:

https://www.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=120-GP-1000-X1

Thanks for your advice!

what power supply you currently have ?

and which cpu and do you plan to overclock it

and 1000watt is overkill even for the rtx 3090 (400 watt if rumors true) let alone a 3070

and if you want the high wattage for zero rpm fan speed the noise you'll get from gpu fans will be higher and you won't hear the psu fans

CPU is already overclocked. I honestly need a new PSU now, which is why I am in the market for one. I have a very old 650 watt Antec unit now. I plan on buying a 1000 watt unit and I know for a fact that the RTX 3070 will not need anymore than that. NVIDIA also confirmed that they are shipping the adapters for the new power connector, so I am set there as well.

a good quality 750 watt psu will be enough for 3070

what future proofing you're talking about in average the power usage of components goes down

this ampere 400watt is an anomaly because nvidia lost a chicken war with tsmc and stayed stuck with samsung 8nm instead of the more effecient 7nm

Once again - I want the overhead so I do not have to worry about upgrades in the future. My original question is not really regarding my brand or wattage choice, and more about the timing of when I should purchase a new unit in regards to the release of the new graphics cards.

In most cases it is a difference of ~$20 - not really concerned there.

You would be better off going with a higher quality 850W PSU than the one you picked in the long run.

Something like a Corsair RMX 850W.

If they can find one at a reasonable price.. They are VERY expensive and hard to find now for the most part.

Its likely the new RTX 3000 series cards will be even more power efficient than their predecessors - again, like others have said, save your money and put it to something other than buying a completely unnecessary new psu

dunno why the timing of buying a new psu matters, if you see a good deal then go ahead and get it

Not really true...

Some of us try and point them in the right direction if they are looking in the wrong one.

Especially when looking at a lower quality 1000W unit to get to that wattage they don't need when a lower wattage better quality unit would be a MUCH better choice.

RTX3000 might have a side effect of now using RGB to increase FPS further....you'll want some PSU budget for that :P Thankfully not much...

Good high quality PSUs (Tier A units) are getting harder to find now in stock and at reasonable prices.

Especially those in the more reasonable wattage ranges, 650W to 850W range...

That said it's best to wait and see if things get better for now.... And keep checking in case what you are looking for comes in stock etc.

I wouldn't rush.. ;)

I kept checking on what I wanted and got lucky finding and getting a Corsair HX 850 at NORMAL pricing as an example. You could even preorder or backorder what you really need if possible.

The new cards will be awhile yet, especially the partner cards so there is time.
