Gadget show says desktop is DEAD!

So this video :

Was made by the popular UK T.V show "the gadget show", I just wanted to share it with you because it made me so angry.

If you watch this I am sure that if you watch this even the most simple of pc enthusiasts should be able to point out the flaws in their argument. For example they point out how you don't need to use a desktop for storage because you can carry around 1tb of storage with a Kingston hyper x predator a close to 1000 quid memory stick. There are so many other annoying things in there that I urge you to please watch it and to dislike it. Oh and also it's not in this video but in the full show after the clip had played they showed a 2000 pound Alienware laptop and said that that even hardcore gamers are using things like that. I don't know about you but I hate everything about Alienware and I will stick to my lovely desktop pc.

"hugely popular". I wouldn't really go that far lol.

Besides, storage isn't even a major point of desktops anyway; that would be the realm of the NAS. Computing power is where the desktop is king. Saying desktops are dead is like saying the train is dead because cars are more flexible. No, they have different applications.

PC Gaming is dead and it will get worse through the years

It is a sad fact

Nothing new

1. Why post it twice?

2. I think it will grow in popularity.

To be honest I think there is some truth in this, despite the fact that that I completely agree with your point. I think most people will be using laptops with external graphics cards etc a few years from now. But for us builders, overclockers and tinkerers, the desktop  is not dying any time soon.  :)

We're fast approaching market saturation for tablets and stuff though, so I don't expect the trend to continue much longer.

The central calculating unit will get smaller but the desktop itself will not go away for quite a while! There's just no comparable experience to a full fledged keyboard, a proper mouse and a laaarger monitor. Not to forget the superior hardware. Latter one is ofc subject to change but desktops will allways stay!

Also who the fuck buys a 1000 quid USB stick? Those fags should go back to their iPads and ultrabooks and continue surfing on instagram!

who cares...

that is true, but due to the fact that tablets and stuff become, imo, quickly dated i think it will stop growing so fast but it will still grow faster than desktops.

The tablet has to be the least desirable mobile computing device there is. It's just a really large phone, completely unnecessary, they should stick to trying to make laptops more portable. Aside from that, PC's, in a gaming aspect at least, are the second most popular as far as PC v.s. consoles go and with the incredible terrible game library that is the mobile library. It isn't going anywhere just yet.

sales may be declining but they are not necessarily disappearing. People can upgrade desktops  much less frequently, for most of society a core 2 desktop computer is plenty fast enough to browse the internet ect.

By no way is the desktop dead, they will always have a use case for the foreseeable future be this pc gaming or productivity where high performance is needed such as video editing.

This. All I use my iPad for is listening to music and watching YouTube more conveniently in bed, but my phone can do that too.

Try editing a video on a tablet (even one like the Surface Pro 2 where you can install your x86 Premiere or Vegas) and then tell me that a desktop computer is dead. Or, you know, playing a game more complicated than Flappy Birds or Tetris.

sales are declining because there is no need to upgrade every year like back in the early 2000's my cpu and motherboard are 4 years old and it does everything i need it too, thats the the issue, stuff has gotten so powerful that the need to upgrade just isnt there, the same thing will happen with Phones and Tablets.

Pre-built desktops are declining in sales but its mostly because lots of people are starting to realize that they can get a lot more for their money if they build one themselves.

And right now building a PC is very easy. You can watch some videos and tutorials and learn how to do it properly.

Also...people still buy Alienware? :|

A 500$ pc, with the right hardware can be better than the "next-gen" consoles for the same price. This just shows how much power a desktop, even a cheap one, has nowadays.

And hardware is relatively cheap.

People who need to work and I mean real work, wont be using a limited laptop with a small screen and a crap keyboard.

They are going to buy a nice desktop and a nice monitor, mouse and keyboard, maybe even use 2 or 3 monitors instead.

Tablets are a nieche and I can't really see the appeal. They arent small enough to carry in your pocket like a smartphone or big and powerful enough (relatively speaking) like a laptop.

They are big smartphones which makes them a bit awkward.
