Intel only - no exceptions

So here we are again,

I hear that Intel are having issues again with 10/7nm. Fine, I'll accept that I cannot get this CPU.

 

So, what CPU can I get which is an i7 extreme editions or higher?

 

I am looking for performance, many threads and many cores for heavy duty stuff like databases, software engineering, multi tasking heavy duty enterprise apps. 

 

What do you recommend? I know there are i9's but are there i9 extreme editions and anything faster than 3.46GHz? (I am comparing with i7 extreme x990)

The current HEDT series Cascade Lake-X seems to be the only logical choice if you need more than 10 cores that consumer platform offers. Unless you want to look at Xeons, but that's more of the same.

That doesn't mean Intel didn't just release a new lineup of CPUs like two months ago.

Ryzen offers more cores per $, and Zen 2 (Ryzen 3000) has comparable single-core performance to Comet Lake so that's not really an issue anymore either.

Why are you specifically looking for Extreme Editions? The current-gen Intel Extreme Edition is the 10980XE, with 18 cores and 36 threads at $999 (if you can find one in stock). Do note that you can get a 3950X with 16 (faster) cores and 32 threads at $750, as well as a cheaper motherboard, and get quite close in terms of performance. Unless your workloads require AVX-512, there's not much point in going with Cascade Lake-X

Clock speed is not a good way to compare CPUs. Especially not when you're comparing a 10 year old 990X to a modern chip on a completely different architecture.

The 990x is almost a decade old. Why are you trying to compare it directly to new ones?

IPC improvements matter a lot when you're comparing a chip of that vintage.

If you don't want a Xeon, I'd just grab a 10900k.

Then you want an AMD processor. Zen 2 cleans Intel's clock in all these use cases. Insisting on Intel here is just saying you want to pay more for less performance.

I agree comparing the clock speed from a 10 year old system is not the way but I guess I am trying to make a point that I want the extremenesss of it and not to be slow with the new arch design.

 

Extreme editions have been way performant for me I have noticed compared to non extreme editions.

Look, I'm not gonna recommend you AMD. I respect your right that you want Intel, and know that it won't change you.

people are recommending AMD for its cheaper price, lower power consumption and het.

 

if you don't have a budget. a 10900k is the best bet.

Are you looking to purchase just the CPU, motherboard, memory and CPU cooler?

What PSU, case and other components do you already have that you plan on reusing?

I mean. Their best HEDT chip right now is the 10980xe.  Other than that you'll be looking at server stuff like a 3275x etc. 

I'm not going to argue as to why I would recommend AMD. But do you have a legitimate reason as to why you're avoiding them? I won't recommend any, I'm just curious why you came to this decision.

Well I have a 9800X and its the lowest end HEDT that was available from Intel at the time in February 2019. Cost $600 and was the only one in my area for like 100 miles or so or expect to pay +$200 more from a seller online (Just one in stock at my closest Micro Center). This was quite an improvement over my 4790k that was starting to show its age and way better than an A8 5500 with a dedicated 270X GPU.  

 

People become loyal to a brand no matter the costs (Look at Apple ). Its a personal choice that takes a lot of convincing to change because they don't like change, who doesn't?!?

The reason I prefer Intel is due to the stability and compatibility. AMD I tried a few times but failed to work for me and the platform just is not mature enough or stable for me.

 

I plan on reusing my existing drives (combo of HDD And SSD) and GFX and soundcard as well as 10Gb NIC.

I would need a PSU (Going to get a heavy/more power one for sure) and need good cooling.

A case I already know which one I want but I am more on the concern of the CPU. The motherboard I have already almost decided which one to go for from the Asus site (linked earlier in this convo)

If it's Intel and no exceptions, with no budget, then you should get either the most powerful consumer or the most powerful HEDT chip.

 

Which means i9-10900k or i9-10980XE. The consumer chip will game better, and the HEDT chip will do everything else better.

I suspect Intel are not going to release any new HDET's any time soon given what I am seeing and hearing. 

 

Indeed I am concerned about the power usage/hotness but seems nothing can be done about except maybe go down 1 CPU model or something
