Hello MB my old friend - Proposed Bill would require backdoors in any device with over 1GB of storage.

I do not want to see any politics not directly related to encryption in this thread. It is outrageous. Where are the armed mods to take the rule violators away? Where are they? This kind of behavior is never tolerated in my threads. You discuss actual politics they give you a ban, right away, no warning. US Politics? We have a special ban for US politics. Capitalists? Right to ban. Socialists? Right to ban, right away. Anarchist? Ban. Authoritarian? Ban. You arguing too much about a political party, system? You right to ban. You understate a fact? Believe it or not, Ban. You overstate a fact? Also Ban. Understate/Overstate. You make a statement and you don't back it up, believe it or not ban right away. We have the best posters in the forum, because of ban.

Considering all the Chinese threads the past three weeks I think they gave up.

No. This is a significantly worse bill than EARN-IT.

You mean, this bill?

Looks like someone beat you to it. Sorry Man.

Please continue discussion in the original thread.

Disgusting.

There may be a positive side though - it won't take long for access to the backdoor to become public domain (that's just where this inevitably leads) which might make it much easier to jailbreak devices and remove the backdoor as well as other proprietary blobs.

Also inb4 manufacturers sell you phones with 1gb of onboard storage and space for an m.2 ssd inside with the option to migrate the entire OS to it. Would actually be kinda cool even if for the wrong reasons.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

sudo chmod -R 000 /*

Even if this became law, it won't be able to be enforced. Software and hardware manufacturers will just decline doing it, or just like now there will be 3rd party encryption software companies that won't follow it, It's not like the US government is going to wholesale ban the sale of every smartphone, computer OS, and other device. Even Apple has told the US government to f-off several times during investigations, there will be limited/no compliance.

My Current Setup:

AMD Ryzen 5900X

Kingston HyperX Fury 3200mhz 2x16GB

MSI B450 Gaming Plus

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo

EVGA RTX 3060 Ti XC

Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB

WD 5400RPM 2TB

EVGA G3 750W

Corsair Carbide 300R

Arctic Fans 140mm x4 120mm x 1

My thoughts

It looks like US politicians are continuing to try to force backdoors into as many devices as possible. While this bill may actually be easier to bypass (Also See: Shell Companies), it's also significantly worse. Thankfully I believe that the tech companies have enough political lobbying pressure (fortunately/unfortunately) that neither this nor EARN-IT will pass.

I'm pretty sure saner heads will prevail otherwise good fricken luck putting the genie back in that bottle.

The same problem when we moved from 40-bit to 128bit in the SSL space. To download NCSA Mosaic, or Netscape Navigator 3.x you typically were asked if you were inside or outside the US and if you answered outside, you couldn't download the 128bit encryption version. Does that stop ANYONE from just downloading it? NO. Heck those geofiltering ip lists can barely figure out what country someone is in, let alone figure out what ISP you're using if you're on IPv6. Sure the AS lists say who owns the range, but not who actually is operating it.

The thing is, all that needs to happen to make sure laws like this basically fail to do anything, is for people to not upgrade their devices and software if it will result in a downgrade. And if people are painfully paranoid about this, they will stop using their expensive smartphones altogether.

And no, switching to a custom OS on an Android phone won't save you, the entire modem in the device is it's own OS and microcontroller. Without being able to see the sourcecode to the firmware blob used by the modem, you'll never be sure.

What could happen if the politicians screw this up, is that it makes everything that connects to the internet illegal.

I’m sorry but no, I will be buying hardware and software from out of country if this gets passed, this is completely unreasonable, I have been playing around with pen testing and other fun things in Kali Linux lately, and once someone finds this “back door” it’s all over, it’s gonna be on forums, and everywhere else imaginable.

So we want MORE security breaches? Cause this is all we keep asking for by demanding back doors. Its like politicians are constantly forgetting they will not be the only ones seeking to use these methods.

Pick your poison, either the tech companies (who already do it), and/or the government. Right?
