Need help on which is which

I'm planning on moving soon and I was wondering what internet speed I should get. I would be moving into the city but it'll still be sorta on the city border if that makes sense. 

Also what is the difference between megabite and megabyte several people have told me those 2 different options and I don't know the difference.

A byte consists out of 8 bits.

So 1 Megabyte is 8 Megabit.
 

They are differenciated by a lower or upper case B.

B = byte

Look at the Megabit (mb) when comparing internet speeds.

Depends on what you do on the internet and with how many people.

I would go for at least 30/3 Mb per person, but maybe more, depending on what you do.

MB = Megabyte

Mb = Megabit

 

1MB = 8Mb, as 1 byte contains 8 bits.

ISPs usually advertise in Mb, as that is a higher number

Okay so since I'm going to be living in the city which one should I get? I play online games and its just gonna be me.

100 megabyte for 20 a month 200 for 40 and 1 gigabyte for 75 a month

100mb/s for $20

- 12.5 MB/s

 

200mb/s for $40

- 25 MB/s

 

1gb/s for $75

- 128 MB/s

If you'll have a lot of people on your network and can afford it go for gigabit but otherwise 200Mb/s is plenty in most cases.

What the hell... meanwhile I’m over here paying $75 for 80Mbps... anyways go with whatever one you could afford, gigabit is nice but not necessary.

When it comes to online games Ping is more important than upload/download speed. I'd research the available ISP's in the area and see which is rated most reliable for the primary application. Beyond that upload/download speed is a matter of how fast you want to go and how long you're willing to wait when downloading/uploading. I'd pick a plan based on whatever price you're comfortable with. Paying for more speed just because someone recommends it may not translate into a worthwhile investment if you don't like the monthly price tag.

Depending on the ISP they might not let you change out their equipment and they might not charge for it. AT&T, at least for me, doesn't charge and I'm forced to use their router but I can put it in bridge/bypass mode. Spectrum gives you a modem for free as well.

Cox on the other hand charges you $10/month even if you return their equipment and use your own! That's going to change next year when the law that stops this BS takes effect but for now it can vary a lot by provider

True. Also, don't get caught in the "NEW" customer pricing, think about after 1 or 2 years how much they will charge you!

I have Xfinity, and we use our own modem without any fees from them!
