Best CPU for gaming?

Is 800 bucks total system budget, cpu only, or cpu and motherboard? Given you want to game at 4k I assume one of the latter 2. In which case your best bet is to get a 200-220 x570 mobo, grab a 2600, and wait for the release of the desktop 4000s.

Addendum - It should be noted that if he wants to maximize the gaming life of the system Ryzen is the vastly preferred platform since in 5-7 years graphics card performance will be hitting the 3.0 cap for even mid range cards.

You seem to care about it otherwise you wouldn't be arguing the fact.

How do you figure that out ? It would be considered the best if it was the fastest in every game at every resolution. If you were playing AC Odyssey or Total War Warhammer II then it isn't.

Also if the op has a 60Hz 4K monitor then there won't be any difference anyway.

You have clearly missed the point I am trying to make.

The fact that I am recommending the 10900K is because it is currently the best overall CPU for gaming and has noting to do with Intel vs AMD.

If the 3950x was better then I would recommend that CPU instead.

By what you are saying there can never be any one thing or person that is best at what they do because they/it would need to win in every category/comparison ever made.

Take for example Formula One: Lewis Hamilton has 5 of won the last 6 Formula One championships so he is clearly the best of the current drivers.

Does that mean that he wins every race ? No but he does win more than any other driver and also the championship because he is clearly the overall best compared to the other drivers.

If you have the money 10900k is definitely the best for gaming assuming it's $800 for just the CPU and not system. I can't imagine anything coming out and immediately making it obsolete and given you upgrade every other year the 10900k would be the best bet.

Except this is meant to be a long term gaming rig, which means his performance will be dictated as much by GPU and SSD speeds as theoretical CPU cap over the next 4-7 years. Which means PCI-e speed is very much a factor and makes the Ryzen 500 chipsets an obviously superior choice.

Possibly yes but OP asked for what is the best CPU in gaming today.

I suggested buying a low end AMD CPU with B550/X570 board so he could upgrade later or simply waiting for Ryzen 4000 but if OP doesn’t want to wait the 10900K is my obvious choice.

I am looking to buy the new i9 10900k unless you guys know of a more powerful option for gaming within my budget.

If that is within your budget, then you have your answer there.  That is currently the most powerful gaming chip.  Price to performance, not fantastic, but performance is currently at the top of the chart.

GL HF with your new rig

El Zoido:  9900k + RTX 4090 / 32 gb 3600mHz RAM / z390 Aorus Master

The Box:  3900x + RTX 3080 /  32 gb 3000mHz RAM / B550 MSI mortar

It is the best cpu at 1080p or 1440p with a high end gpu. If the op was gaming at one of those resolutions then I would agree. It doesn't make sense to spend a lot more on a cpu at 4K.

If he wants to spend his money on an Intel cpu then he would be better just going with the i7 10700K and leave it at that.

Best for each price IMO is R3 3300X, i5-10600K & R7 3700X anything over is kinda overkill? 😅

@smeek14 Getting back to topic...

From the recent launch of Intel 10th gen the 10900K is currently the best CPU for a gaming PC.

With 10c/20t it should last you at least 4-5 years and possibly more but it is hard to tell what the future brings.

Yes an argument can be made to for choosing a low/midrange AMD CPU with a B550/X570 board.

This would allow you to upgrade to the next gen AMD CPU which will be launched later this year.

Or simply wait 3-6 months for the launch of Ryzen 4000.

But if we are speaking of which CPU is best for gaming right now, today !?!

Then it is the 10900K

Also...

The 10600K achieves almost the same performance as the 10900K for a much better price but it is hard to say how long it will last with "only" 6c/12t

If you want the best value CPU then I would probably say go for the R5 3600 or R7 3700x

I was going to go for a 6 year life span like with my i7 4790.

That shouldn't be a problem.

I bought my 9900K about 1 year ago and I don't expect I will need to upgrade my CPU for at least 5 years maybe even more.

As ravenshrike said earlier, you also might want to consider SSD speeds.

Since the new consoles use SSD's the faster speeds of pcie 4 might help you in the future.
