What is the minimum watt PSU I need for my build? And whats recommended?

VincentVolaju

I was hoping some of you could tell me the minimum PSU I would need to safely run my build, as well as your personal PSU suggestion for my specific build. I put my list into the PC part picker website and it said my estimated watts needed was like 340 or something, but that seemed really low to me?

The parts are as followed ...

CPU - Ryzen 5 3600

Mobo - B450M Mortar Max

RAM - 32gb (16x2) Ripjaw V

GPU - Sapphire Pulse 5600 XT

Storage - 1TB M.2 Nvme

Case - Antec VSK10 Window (M-ATX)

Thanks!

A good 550W unit will work just fine (even a 450W would do but you wouldn't have too much headroom). I'd go for at least a CX550 from Corsair, but you can look for other option in the tier list here. I'd suggest going for a B+ or better rated PSU.

Laptop: 2018 Apple MacBook Pro 13"  --  i5-8259U | 8GB LPDDR3 | 512GB NVMe

A good 80+ Broze semi-moudlar 550W will be a good choice. I happen to be fond of the Cooler Master MasterWatt 550 but the Corsair CX550M is also very good. DO NOT get a non-modular power supply,

What's wrong with a non-modular PSU?

They're awful to build with since you have to stuff the rest of the cables somewhere and that can be... an experience especially in a smaller case. Anyone who says "iT's OnLy OnE oR tWo CaBlEs It'S nOt A bIg DeAl" is wrong

OP should be ok with the PSU basement in that case, but I don't disagree with the points you've made.

Semi-modular or non-modular power supplies are okay to be used and there isn't any significant reason to outright avoid them, you can get some zip ties and do some nice cable management to minimize the aesthetic imperfections of having extra cables that are not being used. Although, I understand that it would be more difficult in smaller form factor cases and it is likely going to give you a cleaner look with less effort using only the cable that you need. I wouldn't go for the very minimum power supply that is needed for your system, get one that allows you some headroom for future upgrades. I would recommend the Thermaltake Toughpower Grand RGB Fully-Modular 750 watt PSU:        https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N4C39AR/ref=twister_B085QC4VD9?_encoding=UTF8&th=1

Lies! Lies! All lies!

You clearly have not built in even a smaller ATX case (Phanteks P300 or the like) with a non-modular PSU. It's awful. Semi modular I agree is fine, but non modular? Absolutely not. Never. Especially when almost every halfway decent PSU is semi modular at least these days anyway. Also, don't buy Thermaltake anything, please. They've done some shady shit in the past and also IIRC the Toughpower Grand is not great for the price. Also, 550 is already well above the "bare minimum" which would be 400W. A 3900X and 2080 Ti can be run off a 550W PSU comfortably.

A system with a Ryzen 5 + RX 5600 XT shouldn't consume more than 300W. There's absolutely no need for a 750W power supply.

You can view some power consumption measurements for the Sapphire RX 5600XT in this review. https://www.techpowerup.com/review/sapphire-radeon-rx-5600-xt-pulse/31.html

Peak 175W power draw during gaming for the graphics card.

For a standard ATX case, a non-modular power supply should not be an issue, although as I have mentioned in the quoted segment from my post, it is more challenging to get a clean aesthetic with smaller form factor cases without having modular cables.

While it may be true that the OP's current hardware configuration does not take that much wattage, if you were to upgrade in the future, the higher wattage could be needed. The difference between the 650w and 750w variant of the Thermaltake Toughpower Grand RGB was very little (13 dollars difference).

Thermaltake is a reputable brand that is used frequently in many even high-end systems, they have a 10 year warranty on this PSU and a good amount of other premium features.

His case is uATX, so even if we believe that non modular PSU is not an issue in an ATX case (which is not true), it certainly will be in that one especially because it's a cheaper case and there's not many cable management aids from what I can see.

After reading everyones response, it sounds like I don't really need a 750w PSU, and a 550w would be fine. There is about a $40 price difference ($140 to $100) if I still went with the Corsair RMx series but just dropped it from 750w to 550w. So if 550w isn't too low for my build, then I'll probably go with this PSU.

Corsair RM 550x

My Antec VSK10 just arrived this morning, and it is even smaller than I originally thought lol. So I definitely want to go with a full modular one just to have the least amount of cables as possible.

Yeah, I am actually about to order it right now then. The last part I need for the build!

I took a photo of the case with the CPU box and a screwdriver for scale. Not sure if I'll be able to fit everything in here, but worst case scenario, it was only a $50 case, so if I have to, I can just eat the loss and buy a bigger case lol.
