FYI the linked article is from Feb 2019 and the photos are all from 2018. Not exactly new.

You can find the latest images from JunoCam on the mission website. All the raw image data is downloadable and most of the color images posted online are made from the raw data by citizen scientists.

And if the first image looks weird like it's a painting, it's because it essentially is.

To produce this artwork, Lundh selected a more contrasting part of one of Jupiter's storms, then cropped the image and applied an oil-painting filter.

They look like Picasso paintings, especially the last one.

What's with the cheap photoshop filter?  I thought these missions went for scientific accuracy and information, not bad art.  Surely someone has messed with these and they aren't the originals?

I've watched the photo releases from NASA over the years but never seen it done like this.  Normally they just publish the final photos, which I think is a nice happy medium between raw data which is not visually pleasing and fan creations intended to enhance certain features, etc.  Is this new or am I just really out of the loop?

I mostly agree. I'd rather see quality photos processed by those who at least know the science, even if the colorized photos are mostly art. This idea of releasing the raw data to the public and encouraging them to process it themselves is somewhat new. Part of NASA's attempt to be connect with the public and what not.

More is better, I don't have any issue with that.  I'm just surprised and a little sad they didn't also release their own versions.
