Pandemic with a Chance of Free Internet: Major North American ISPs remove data caps

Yes, it’s true the coronavirus situation has led major ISPs to give us consumers a break! ^_^

 

Concessions ranging from waived overage fees to removed data caps and free public hotspots took effect this past weekend and will last until April or May depending on your ISP. Those participating as of today include Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, Mint Mobile, TracFone, US Cellular, AT&T, Comcast, Frontier, CenturyLink, Wave Broadband, Google Fiber, Spectrum, Cox, Altice, Charter, Sparklight, Windstream, TekSavvy, Videotron, Telus, Bell, Rogers, and Shaw.

Isn't the minimum for hand washing supposed to be 40 seconds?

I wouldn't be so praiseworthy. Those data caps never should have been there in the first place. The ISPs have been saying they were necessary for congestion, which is BS. Watch this starting at 13 minutes in:

As per ISPs I give them praise for what they’re worth over the next 2 months, not the kind of service they usually offer.

 

Case-in-point: ZillaTalk (MNVO under AT&T) does not slow down your 4G data usage after 30GB unless they suspect that you are abusing the network ~ say clogging-up ZillaTalk’s allotted bandwidth, unauthorized reselling of data plans, and using the network for telemarketing and robocalls.

SARS-COV2 is not an alternative name for COVID19, please try to be accurate when posting information as fact.

 

SARS-COV2 is the name of the virus.

 

COVID19 is the name of the disease that is caused by the Virus, it literally means COrona VIrus Disease 2019.

Corporate greed is nothing new, the fact that companies have been sliding these claims under the rug for many years now, happens to be the entire issue. The companies should look to engineer AI bots that track this very thing. 4G jacking by bloated companies have resulted in consumers data speeds dropping, and rates rising - the government agencies should engineer AI to look into that as well.

Here in the UK, there is actual congestion, but AFAIK most of it is "virtual". The ISPs don't rent enough server/router space/bandwidth. It was so bad with some of the companies at one point, that you'd get 100% speed at the beginning of the month, then cut outs/drop outs and throttling after the first week. Thus proving, it was a virtual problem, not people stopping using the internet for the first week. ;)

 

A few towns/streets had actual congestion, of houses trying to fit through 1 link on a cabinet, or 1 small sub station. But AFAIK the upgrades to a fiber to the cabinet systems, and the main exchanges, seems to have solved this for the short term at least.

I love how this whole situation flat out proves everything we have ever said about home internet connection data caps being bullshit.
If people truly are staying home my guess is that traffic for Youtube, Nextflix, Pornhub exc has increased and people are using more of the "precious bandwidth", yet everything seems to be working fine regardless.

Now excuse me as I continue to work on my backlog of things I wanted to watch.

Coronacation is shaping up to be pretty good. No school for 3 weeks, free pron, no data caps, free $1000 for US citizens, cheap Airbnb’s, cheap gas, great time for investments, cheap airfare, and corona isn’t really deadly to a majority of the population
