Can't install plugins on FreeNAS

Go to solution Solved by saymyusername,

I fixed it! I came across this thread while reading up on @Dutch_Master's suggestion about returning default values.

https://www.ixsystems.com/community/threads/iocage-set-up-itself-on-wrong-pool-how-can-i-move-it.61234/#post-435258

Effectively, all I did was run the command

iocage clean -a

Which cleared out all the data from my existing iocage. I'm not sure why this worked, but I'm guessing I had improperly set up the jail or something along those lines, which was somehow preventing access to plugins. Anyway, my available plugins now load (although I haven't installed anything yet).

Thanks all for your help. :)

Hi all,

Recently set up a new FreeNAS build and got everything set up. I can connect to it on the network via my desktop, however, I'm not able to load the plugins so I can install Plex etc.

In the web GUI when I go to Plugins>Available, I get the following message and an endless loading screen:

I'm new to servers/networking so the following is pretty much the extent of my knowledge on the topic. After some searching online it seems that it may be something to do with the DHCP or DNS. I set up a static IP yesterday which I'm guessing is related. Based on troubleshooting for similar issues, I've tried pinging google.com in the shell and that doesn't work (see below).

Could anyone give me some suggestions as to why this is happening and how I can fix it?

Thanks!

Jake

It looks like your nameserver entry has been borked, affecting DNS. Try the following, as root (superuser)

ping -c3 8.8.8.8

The IP address is actually a Google server, you should get 3 replies from it (as it only asked 3 times). If it does, you need a nameserver, if it doesn't, you're in a different league of error finding.

What should I do?

You say you set up a static IP, but did you define correct gateway and netmask?

As far as I'm aware yes - how can I know for sure I've done it right?

Which version of freenas are you running? is it the latest 11.2-U7 IIRC?

Anyway, if you login to the webgui, go to the Network menu, and then network summary, and take a screenshot please, that'll ket us know what we're dealing with.

Hmm, seems fine. Did you try a reboot, just in case?

Are you all set up with users, groups, storage/pool, sharing etc?  plus you didn't answer my question about the version, sometimes can be helpful. IIRC I had a bug on 9.11 that gave me similar errors for plugins, but not 100% sure of the version, it's been a while since that happened.

If you wanted, you could save your config under system/general, and export password secret seed, then reset the config to try again.... if that doesn't fix the problem, then just load back in the config you just saved. That did help me in the past I believe when I had problems with network settings. I wish I could be more clear, but was a long time ago now, maybe 2-3 years ago. Since then I have had no problems setting up configs on any of my freenas implementations... usually takes me around 30 mins to do a basic config setup for a few users, using plex plugin etc.

What does the file /etc/network/interfaces tell you?

cat /etc/network/interfaces

It might be a good idea to test the system with DHCP enabled. Do the following:

cp /etc/network/interfaces /etc/network/interfaces.bak
rm /etc/network/interfaces
touch /etc/network/interfaces
echo "# The loopback network interface" >> /etc/network/interfaces
echo "auto lo" >> /etc/network/interfaces
echo "iface lo inet loopback" >> /etc/network/interfaces

echo "# The primary network interface" >> /etc/network/interfaces
echo "allow-hotplug eth0" >> /etc/network/interfaces
echo "iface eth0 inet dhcp" >> /etc/network/interfaces
echo "# This is an autoconfigured IPv6 interface" >> /etc/network/interfaces
echo "iface eth0 inet6 auto" >> /etc/network/interfaces
reboot

This does the following: make a backup copy of the file, remove the original file, populate it with dhcp entries for your system and reboot it. If you don't want IPv6, omit the last pair of echo commands. During boot, take note of the IP address the DHCP server in your LAN assigns to the box.

@Dutch_Master

When running that first command I get this:

image.png.28f7a2e95431e8cf655843be17a64432.png

Obviously this means I'm unable to copy the file to run the other commands you've suggested :/ do you know what could be causing this?

No, but I'll have to dive into FreeNAS myself to see what's wrong. Could be a while, I don't have a hypervisor setup ATM. Will get back to you ASAP, perhaps others will chime in here too.

I haven't had much success in getting FreeNAS to work, primarily as the virtual machine hypervisor won't play ball ATM, so it will be some time before I can get back to you. Sorry. Hopefully someone else will be able to assist you in the mean time. However, in this video:

it appears the installer has the option to repair an existing installation by returning it to default values as well as configuring various parts of the network (menu visible at ca 4:19). Give that a try first, then carefully document any further steps you take trying to reconfigure your system again.
