What AMD's DockPort Can Do

mgsstar

This is a pretty cool thing that AMD has created. Like the accessorize feature where you can use adapters to output hdmi and have more usb ports but wonder how much they will cost. The link in the description is currently password protected so I think they will release more info during MWC:  http://bit.ly/AMDatMWC14 (http://www.amd.com/us/aboutamd/newsroom/Pages/mwc-amd-2014.aspx)

Wow, so creative...

Not sure if sarcastic or not.

But it is, sure beats the elusive thunderbolt and with even more potential functionality.

I think it was adopted as a standard already, just not sure if manufacturers will adopt it.

So it's Thunderbolt, basically.

You're and your are not the same. Neither are their, there, and they're. Defiantly and Definitely are definitely not the same. Definately and Rediculous are not words, and you should feel bad for misspelling them. If English is your first language, you don't have a learning disorder, and you get any of these wrong, you are making the entire forum slightly dumber by doing so. Please take the extra three seconds to type properly, and have a nice day.

There are benefits because it would probably be easier to implement than thunderbolt. Thunderbolt keep in mind had to be completely rooted into the system with pci-e. Also it's royalty free so manufacturers might be less reluctant. I'm interested to see where this goes.

For the people who don't know. The connector is DisplayPort (mini DisplayPort to be exact).

DisplayPort specs states that it can carry: Video, Audio, and as optional, if the GPU wants to support it: Auxiliary (USB).

DisplayPort supports daisy chaining as well.

This is more reason why Thunderbolt is useless. DisplayPort does that. It's just a question if Nvidia, Intel, and when AMD will actually support USB through it.

DisplayPort strength is that it is cheap, and has no royalties fees. Consumes also less power than Thunderbolt, DVI, and HDMI, yet backward compatible. And support more plug-in's and out then DVI and HDMI. Thunderbolt is very expensive, plus requires expensive chip on both sides.

i will put this in BOLD so you dont shout proprietary

We’ve been hearing about AMD DockPort (originally called Lightning Bolt) since 2012 and it looks like AMD’s low-cost alternative to Thunderbolt is getting closer to being an actual product that you can run out and purchase. DockPort was adopted as an official DisplayPort standard extension by VESA at CES 2014 and the standard is to be finalized in Q2 2014. VESA describes DockPort as an emerging technology that enables high-speed USB 3.0 data over the existing DisplayPort connector. Originally developed by AMD, Texas Instruments, and other VESA member companies, the DockPort extension will allow notebooks, tablets and other small form factor computers to aggregate the display, data and power interfaces into a single convenient connector. The thought of being able to push high-resolution video to an external displays, quickly transfer file with an external storage device and being able to power the battery in the device all at the same time with one cable on the device almost sounds too good to be true.

“AMD’s versatile DockPort connection opens up a world of possibilities, like a portable hub where you can charge, transform, accessorize and otherwise connect your device in an all-in-one solution, reducing cable clutter and bringing data and display connectivity to your notebook or tablet via a single, DockPort supported DisplayPort link.” - AMD

AMD has published a new video clip on YouTube that shows off the capabilities of the DockPort connection standard that is certainly worth a look.

non proprietary yay !!!

still waiting for VESA standard that controls variable VBLANK intervals

If amd and other companies keep pushing USB technologies they will have the potential to stifle thunderbolt before it gets a chance to prove itself.
