Rail shooters used to make most of their profits from arcades and would get ported to home consoles as an afterthought in most cases. Now that arcades are essentially dead, it doesn't make much sense financially to develop them anymore. Developers are also almost forced to include light guns with gyro tech bundled with the game since almost nobody has an existing light gun controller, which is expensive.

Yep, it is a dead genre these days because, as mentioned above, arcades as a whole have died out and that was the main audience for on rails shooters.  Games like Panzer Dragoon and House of the Dead were good, and Crimson Dragon tried, but they just don't work these days.  Unless you grew up playing them, they'll just seem sort of dumb, casual gamers aren't going to find them interesting, and yeah, including a light gun with every game is prohibitively expensive.

As do I, but I'd have a hard time seeing someone new to gaming, or at least new to rail shooters, finding them to be amazing.  It'd be like trying to get a kid into Galaga or Contra, just not going to happen because they've got CoD and Black Ops as their frame of reference for shooters.

Yeah, the first Star Fox is a rail shooter, definitely!

I never considered there could be VR rail shooters, since I don't really play VR games, myself.  That'd be a good platform for rail shooters to survive with, so makes sense.

Well if Arcades dying out would be a reason for genres to die we wouldn't have any games today, except maybe AAAA cinematic on rails corridor shooters a la Uncharted ?

Im just slightly exaggerating because that's not the reason on rail shooters (almost died)

Tldr: LCD screens killed on rail shooters because those light guns don't work on them.  Simple.
