First Time Overclocking, How Do I Actually Overclock?

So I want to overclock my FX 8320 to 4Ghz or more, I just need to figure out how. Im using the Gigabyte 990-FXA-UD3 Motherboard (rest of my specs in sig) Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

2. Do the stuff they do but with your own values like voltage and multiplier

Didn't the motherboard come with software that does it for you?
My Gigabyte board did. You opened the program, there were three large buttons. Green Yellow and Red. Each one was a different level of overclock.

Click appropriate color and you're done.

when doing it in bios, make sure you research your voltage values and dont just use everyone else's. but if you need specific help, come back to this thread and people or me will help you.

You want to change the cpu clock ratio. When you click on that you want to slowly select 3.7 or 3.8 and work your way up to the 4.0 mark. Doing so your going to have to so some form of stress testing to the chip, so I'd recommend something like prime95.

It's one of 4? I think utilities that installed with my motherboard.

It was an Intel board though, not AMD.

 

I'd probably go through the BIOS and learn it that way though, knowledge is power.

fwiw I never had a reason to overclock my chip, it still does just fine stock.

I got Prime95 downloaded and ready to go, which test do I run?

My processor is currently turbo boosting to 3.7ghz. should I disable turbo boosting?

to be honest, with overclocking, the motherboard you use and the CPU you have doesn't really change the method you use (or at least the method i use) for overclocking, you still do it in a similar way, its just finding where things are in the bios is the only difference.

Overclocking the FX8320 is the same as the FX8350 (they are basically the same chips anyways) so the process will be exactly the same. Furthermore, 99% of the relevant BIOS settings, used in overclocking, across all 990FX boards have the same names. Just watch a tutorial in YouTube and replicate it. When you achieve the desired clock speed, test it with Prime95 for 2-3 hours with the test - SmallFFTs. If it is stable then try to lower the voltage a bit and check again with the stress test until the system becomes unstable. After that revert to the lowest voltage setting with which your overclock was stable. That is it! 

 

PS: If you do decide to overclock wit the Bus Frequency, pay close attention to your RAM frequency because they are linked and will increase proportionally. You will have to set up manually the ram speed back near its stock frequency. 

Also pay close attention to your temps. You can use CoreTemp, RealTemp or AMD Overdrive to do that. If you see processor temps below the ambient temperature that means that the sensor in your board is busted. Unfortunately many of the AMD boards are like that. Lets hope yours is not one of them.
