i got a notification for the video suggest topic that's been there since forever?

This happens if a new thread was posted in a subforum you follow was merged in to an existing thread.

You receive the notification that a new thread was posted, however because the posts were merged it shows up as the old post.

 

This one was originally posted in the Tech News section and the post merged in to the video suggestion thread.

...what the hell? why did i get a notification for a topic that has been there forever?

I'm not 100000% sure but I think this is how that happened : 
1. Colton makes new thread
1. Colton merges old thread with new thread

When you merge a thread, the notification inherits the location / title of wherever it was merged to
