Advice on CPU, Mobo and RAM

Hi all,

 

I'm thinking of upgrading my pc from a 1231v3 with 16gb of ddr3@1600MHz to a R5 3600 with 16gb of ddr4@3000mhz.

 

I'm thinking of either the MSI b450 Mortar Max or the MSI b450 Gaming plus Max. Any advice or experience?

 

Also I am wondering if I will find much improvement at all. I have a RTX 2060 and use my pc mostly for gaming (RPGs such as the Witcher and Metro) and 3d modelling using blender. The upgrade will cost me about €350, and I will try to sell my current components for €200-€250.

If your hardcore into gaming then grab the i9900KS and overclock to 5Ghz and call it a day.  If you render all day and use heavy workload mutli threaded apps more then you game then grab a 3900x.  Both these CPU's are about the same price.  But the i9900KS will be king for gaming.

yes, about 10-15%. you'll get the boost from Ryzen IPC and also memory speed.

The i9 9900ks is way over budget? 

 

OP is looking at the R5 3600. Either way for gaming it will be an upgrade over the 1231v3, and MSI motherboards are solid.

The 3600 will do just great with a 5700XT or a 2060.  Any video card higher then the CPU becomes bottleneck.

I'm not really hardcore, mostly looking for a good price/performance upgrade.

Figured they are both fine. The mortar is slightly more expensive, but I'm not really a fan of the aesthetic of the gaming plus.

Figured they are both fine. The mortar is slightly more expensive, but I'm not really a fan of the aesthetic of the gaming plus. 

They are different from factors though, gaming plus max is ATX, mortar max is mATX.

I have a smallish ATX case. I might want to get a mAtx case at some point but it's not really interesting to me atm. I'll probably go for the mortar since it's more neutral in colour and I could switch to a smaller case at some point.

That's fair, smaller cases are nice. I have an mATX system and ITX as well.
