Upsetting all three Kaby Lake-X buyers, support dropped in Cascade Lake-X bios updates

So lots of easy jokes about how Kaby Lake-X was a horrible idea and a great example of how Intel's marketing team isn't always the brightest. But, does this mean that you can't use a Kaby Lake-X chip to update the bios on say, the new board you bought that didn't get an update for Cascade Lake-X out of the box since it had been sitting around on the shelf for a while? Or can you update it but as soon as it updates you can't use the old chip anymore? That's kinda the only valid use of one of those chips now, kinda like the <$50 Athlons on AM4.

Ultimately not actually big news. As fun as it is to go "Hey look, Intel motherboards are having the same problem as AMD motherboards!", Kaby Lake-X was "very niche" at best and I doubt they moved many of them. For that one person out there that's been sitting on a full X299 platform and a quad core waiting for something like the new price cut specials, good luck with your bios update.

EDIT: For clarification, this is not an Intel mandate as far as I know, it's just an issue of space on the BIOS/UEFI chip. So just like with the AM4 platform, it's hit or miss depending on how big that chip is and who your MB vendor is.

Kaby Lake-X was the pinnacle of Intel's disconnection with their consumer market.

 

So uh Intel, AMD has brought up 6 cores and 8 cores to the mainstream which is great... do you think you could do something like that for us?

 

Oh don't worry we know the solution to your problems, here have a 4c/4t processor on HEDT so you can buy a motherboard today and in 2 years time you can buy an overpriced second hand higher core count CPU for your motherboard, true genius upgrade-path future proofing!

I kinda hope that means I will finally be able to pick up a 7740x for cheap. The CPUs only make sense in one area: competitive overclocking. Probably not much better than a 7700k but they are already cheaper. Just still not cheap enough for me.

That's sad, can't even use Kaby-Lake-X as bios update only CPUs like the AM4 Bulldozer APUs. Their biggest use is to steal their IHS and put them on top of a 7980XE then

Yeah they're in production as coffee lake
