access the internet on school networks

Toby D.

So i'm sick of windows 7 on our school PC's because it's slow, old and not customizable. I  had  the idea to install Arch Linux on an USB stick so that i am able to use my own OS with all the  programs i need. That worked out pretty well, I'm able to boot into Linux (actually very sad, but my school didn't even set up a bios password for some reason). The only problem: I don't have access to the internet as I'm somehow blocked out of the school network. Linux recognizes the ethernet connection and in the menu it states "connected", but I don't have internet access.

Here's the question: is it possible to somehow manipulate the network settings that i have access to the Novell network?

p.s: i'm not even breaking any rules since I don't install any software on the PC :)

and i'm sorry if my english is bad, i'm not a native speaker.

Hi @Toby D.

Very depending on the security that the network might be using. ARP or DHCP can be blocked. Like Wizardy already says check if you get any IP adres. Try to ping default gateway. Do you get any error message when attempting to access the internet? And yea i would recommend against trying to work around the security if its not plug and play.

I bet you actually are, but that is between you and them.

This is going against the schools wishes so you wont get much help here.

Actually, I think posts like this to circumvent rules are against... the rules.

I sincerely doubt you need to use Linux or go thru all this hassle, to be able to do schoolwork on school PC's anyway.

i don't need to, but i use cloud storage for example and (for some reason) everybody can access the browsing history and my passwords if i don't delete the whole history because our network is dumb and insecure

yeah, that doesn't really work, there are ways of finding out information, and the PC still has to send out packages.

also, schools probably disable incognito mode so the kids are able to be monitored.

Ofcours there always ways to find the information back unless you're using tails or something. But this makes it more difficult for the average joe.

I'm guessing the school probably routes traffic through a proxy server, most do to restrict website access. Without the proxy server settings you'll get a connection but not be able to access anything. Check a browser on one of the Windows machines for proxy settings set in the connection settings.
