Tips needed to grow a beard

Hi community,

I'm 23 year old and I've decided to grow a beard. I decided to write a post on here, because when I google about said subject - the results are either:
1. Posts about people who unfortunately cannot get facial hair to grow (No worries, my facial hair is growing quite quickly)
2. Or some articles that tries to sell me something
I may be just bad at googling.

So, I know nothing about beards, I'm an absolute newb: I do not know how to take care of it, I do not know which products/tools to use either. Also, at the moment my facial hair comes out like spikes on a hedgehog, does not seem to soften - Is there a way to "fix" this? Also, the hair grows, but the density is meh - is there something I can do?...

Anyway, any tips is welcome ! Thank you

If you cant get facial hair to grow, how can we help you grow a beard lol? I can just suggest you to let that shit grow, I personally let it grow up a decent amount then shape it.

Don't really need to do anything then. Just continue being manly and the rest comes naturally.

Wait a few weeks and next time you go to the Barbers for a haircut have them trim your beard while you're there.

If you want you can use Rogaine. You apply it twice daily and you'll for sure grow a beard. Only sucks that once you stop using it anything it helped grow will shed away. It's mostly genetics

FYI, the beard fad is dying.  Look  how you want to look, not how every wanna-be mountain man runs around with unkempt crap on their faces. No...

There are lots of resources on the web. One of my favorites is the Beard Baron. 

 

Here are a couple tips off the bat:

- Let it grow unkempt for 8+ weeks. Don't even think about trimming it, just let it grow. Then once its got some length and volume start training it and trimming into shape.

- Get a high quality comb

- Get a high quality boars hair brush

- Get a pair of high quality hair scissors

- Get a high quality set of clippers and guards

When I was growing it at first I had to let it grow for about a month for it to not be patchy. I mainly keep it pretty trim, not like a large beard or anything, and it looks pretty ok.

All depends on how long and what shape you want of it. I've tried few before settling to current (not the one in my avatar) few years ago. Had one going around chin, then what is shown on avatar (yes, thats actual photo, just drawn onto one). Current is just little stock on chin. I found out that I don't like mustache, and that having something on lower lip doesn't agree with my facial hair growth rate. Which is "shave every other day".

 

The tips. Select what style you want. If you aren't sure, try few. Which is easiest to shave onto mold, easiest to trim, doesn't annoy you (or your significant other). I don't really do anything but shave and trim maybe monthly. My brother has bit more of beard, so if you plan to go that route, using skin lotion becomes a thing. My brothers advice is that if you apply lotion, do it for the night. It takes some time to soak in, and while awake, you have more tendency to to touch your beard.

Just don't shave it for at least a month and let it grow.

The great thing about a beard is it just grows on you. Using a good scrub and getting yourself a proper beard comb will help greatly in the long run if you decide you want any appreciable length, but depending on the denseness and fullness of your beard at various lengths will influence what styles you can and cannot wear.

 

Give it 3-6 months of uninterrupted growth (keeping your neckline clean of course) and see about where you like it. Not everyone is built to be Gimli and some people look better with short or even no facial hair.

Go to the store and get some beard cream. It will help with the itch. Once in gets to a certain length it should stop itching. I personally just let mine grow and I use the same shampoo for my hair on my beard.

one good tip...do not wash beard with shampoo..it will dry your skin and make your face itch and flakey...use face or body wash.
once you get a good growth going a decent beard oil (after shower) and beard butter (other times)

Thank you so much for helping me out everybody!

I just want to add that the beard-style I intend to grow is the one that Chris Hemsworth has in Thor Ragnarok - so quite short.

From what I could gather:
- Let it grow for weeks, even months - be patient.
- Healthy diet and physical exercise
- Trim and style it according to "what I get"

- Use a high quality beard comb and scrub if it gets quite long
- beard cream for the itch
- apply lotion for skin care before sleeping

all i do is wash it through whenever i shower and keep it neatly trimmed. More then that i havent bothered with and its been working. I only get an uneven goatee and a mustache though

thats also pretty much what I do, personal hygiene is really important with facial hair.

Personally, I set myself the goal that if I'm going to grow a beard, I'd make sure that I keep it in good condition. In addition to the already mentioned methods, I have had great success with beard oils and beard balm. The oil is good to keep your skin from flaking and beard balm can be used to style it to a certain degree. I don't know where you live, but both Texas Beard Company (no points for guessing where they're based) and Viking Beard Company (based out of York) have served me well in this regard for the past several years.

 

Aside from that, I can tell you that the horrible spiky / itchy stage is an unfortunate phase that is part of the process of growing a beard. I can, however, tell you that it usually only lasts a day or two before the beard becomes fluffier.

 

A barber can help trim your beard, but personally I have a pair of beard trimmers that do the job just fine without having to make any appointment.
