Anyone else disappointed that Linus never tries to run Minecraft on the supercomputers he builds?

Given that Minecraft is A. the new Doom of "will it run" and B. is vastly more CPU intensive than GPU, does anyone else find it odd that Linus has never tried running max render distance Minecraft on the ridiculous 32+core computers he builds?

 

It's one thing to run base Minecraft with the 8-12 render distance, but cranking that all the way up with every graphical setting maxed out and then setting off a 100+ TNT explosion-while looking at it-would be a pretty cool thing to do to show off just how much more CPU power his machine has versus something most of us can compare to

 

Plus I'm sure "$40,000 Minecraft Machine" or "We spent $60,000 to play Minecraft?!" is just the type of clickbait title LTT would use.

 

Also the absolute absurdity of it all makes me laugh. Linus builds one of the most advanced computers on the planet only for it to play a game you can run on a 32 bit OS...probably in 5K with ray tracing too.

That’s like asking for him to run Team Fortress 2 on a very powerful computer. By that I mean there’s no reason for it.

Minecraft is very easy to run. Setting off a large TNT explosion chain in a max render distance, amplified world brings many normal computers to an absolute crawl though.

 

It even creates it's own metric where CPU performance can now be graded based upon maximum TNT drops (up to 100) before significant frame drops occur in a max render distance world. I realize it's a little less scientific than Cinebench, but it's still an interesting metric given that Minecraft is literally the most played game in the world right now.

Interesting. I wonder where the cap of engine vs hardware comes in at because there is definitely more slowdown on say my crappy old HP with the dual core and 4GB of RAM versus a more advanced hardware system. Now I've got a new rabbit hole to go down.

I know this is nagging, but get your facts straight. Linus hasn't built any supercomputers. He has visited few, but usage hours on those are way too expensive to even install Minecraft.

I have Sildur's shaders extreme VL turned on in optifine 1.14.4 and render distance set to 20 chunks, and I average 60-80fps.

Use Microsoft for Windows 10, that version runs on low end laptops without any issues at more than playable FPS.

Minecraft isn’t hard to run it’s just shittily optimized. It’ll run on core duos and GT9600s just fine.

Not to be pedantic about it, but what else am I supposed to call a computer that can comfortably support 7 editors all working with 4K footage or any of the other systems he builds that cost upwards of 40x or more as much as any computer I have ever built (adjusting for inflation)?

 

 

I realize the term "supercomputer" is generally only used for the particle physics or Deep AI learning machines, but aside from calling it an absurdly/abhorrently/disgustingly expensive computer, there isn't really a single word term I can toss out that easily differentiates it from other high end systems that pale in comparison to it's price and performance. Utra high-end workstation maybe?

 

If we go with an automotive analogy I realize Linus's most expensive builds are like saying a Lotus Elise is a supercar versus a Lambo, Ferrari, or Bugatti, but I'm just really at a loss for words as to what the builds that cost as much as my car are supposed to be called.

Expensive and not-practical. Or as Linus himself has called them "super-high-end" because he knows what supoercomputer means.

^ They're just really high end workstations basically. Supercomputers AFAIK are basically a massive collection of computers that run as one, they'll have hundreds of CPUs and GPUs to a "single" supercomputer.

I realize my choice of wording wasn't correct, but it was 3 am and I was tired when I originally wrote this drivel. If I had to go back and rewrite it I'd probably go with something like "Ultra-station" or "Bourgeois Build"

Just call it Ultra-High End. Easy. Ultra-High end is the land of $500+ mobos, massive RAM stacks and more than 2 high end GPUs, and stuff like Intel's Xeon platform with stupid fat core counts and hexa-channel RAM. Hella up there, but nowhere close to supercomputer levels. 

It's like a billionaire's private yacht, sure it's massive but I can't call that an aircraft carrier. An aircraft carrier is on an entirely different scale of big, and does different things.

Nah his Benchmarks needs more Destiny 2. The game is going to be free essentially starting October so no reason to not to do it. Also Space Cadet would be a good one.
