Philips to release 27", 32" and 55" 4K 120 Hz HDR Monitors

The only real technical difference between a monitor and a TV is the built-in tuner. Modern TV's also tend to be SmartTV's, but that's obviously a sub category.

Large monitors, however, tend to be extremely expensive for some reason. Often much more expensive than a comparable TV (though granted, most TV's don't include higher refresh rates).

That has to do with yield amounts in the factories I presume. The 32" Monitor and the 32" TV costing $3000 and $300 respectively.

The sweet spot will be when UHD HDR 4K is available in every size from 23.8" to 80". I have a 4K 23.8" monitor and it's about the right size for the desk I have. I could get a pair of 27" monitors instead but I can't fit two of them on the desk as easily. I bought the 4K monitor (MG24UQ, IPS 4K) to replace the previous Samsung 245BW which had been getting image retention for the previous few months. Otherwise I might have held out a bit longer to get one that eventually has HDR.

As for technical differences, there is zero differences in the panels themselves. I've been using the other 1080p TN monitor as a "TV" for a few years, originally thinking I bought a LED backlit model, Benq E2420HD, which replaced a 19" chinese model that went "bang". Other people I know, or have visited, tend to have really crappy "720p" TV's in 32" sizes. So it's technically cheaper and nicer to get a "dumb" computer monitor to use as a TV rather than pay more money for an inferior screen and all the smartTV junk on it when you're going to use an external box anyway.

Ideally, TV's would just ship with a raw eDP port connected directly to the panel on the back to connect to your "smartTV" box of choosing, or have a "dumb" auto-switch which has DP/HDMI, or an efficient analog scaler for older video game consoles. You're paying up to an extra $1000 on some smart TV systems just to have another computer sit idle and add latency. Like if these TV manufacturers were really smart, they would ship the "smartTV" brain separately because they could then sell upgrade kits every two years instead of trying to convince people to replace their TV every two years.

We all saw how much 3DTV flopped, and nVidia removed all support for those screens around April of this year. VR is also a flop. At some point I imagine that the only difference between a TV and a Computer will be who owns the "store" for it. Is a SmartTV really any different from an iMac?

55" Monitor flat and not cuved, my neck is hurting just looking at the image.

Ouchy.. does it come with 10 free chiropractor sessions?

Either that or it needs to be put so far back it might as well be 1440p since its so far away what does 4k matter anymore.

34" seems to be the sweet spot where you don't need to do a head turn to see everything.

Now, if this was IPS or equivalent, id be all over it.

No way to get back to TN and VN panels for me tho,... the difference is just too massive and i often have people watching my screen from an angle. They need to see the content.

It's VA panels.

No one makes TN panels in these size (32" and larger).

Philips also use VA panels in 99% of their screens.

Remember kids, "HDR Ready" just means it can take an HDR signal, they may not even live up to HDR400 which is already not real HDR.

...that's a TV

Monitors and TVs are quite different. Both are displays, but both are optimized a bit differently. Linus covered this a while back before the BFGDs were announced.

Also, I see a few people saying "too expensive" but this is probably the opposite for me. There are a lot of features (ie, boxes being checked on a spec sheet), but I wonder about the quality of the displays. At this price, I wouldn't expect top tier. Those are the kinds of things that are going to cost 2500+ for a 32".
