how to install windows to a new drive?

currently i have a 1tb hard drive. and im going to replace it with a 1tb SSD [not m.2] do i need that disc that came with my pc to install windows or whatever you need on the new ssd? cause i lost the disc that came with my pc and i wouldnt know how to install windows and that on the new ssd

Just clone the HDD to the SSD.

 

If you want to install fresh, make a USB tool from Windows.  Then you'll have to activate it somehow:  How did you get Windows on your PC in the first place?  Prebuilt I think?

Having a fresh install doesnt hurt also cloning hdds to ssds is not ideal because they store information differently

You can either just get the cables (SATA data is a couple dollar cable, SATA power should be on your PSU) and connect the SSD without mounting (it has no moving parts, so doesn't matter if it's not mounted down) and then do clone. 

If you are not gonna clone, I would still recommend connecting both at the same time.

 

You can also install Windows fresh:

1. Download the installer here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-en/software-download/windows10

2. Get a 8GB+ flash drive and choose to make an external installer in this software and direct it to the flash drive

3. connect the SSD

4. Set up the boot order to start from the flash drive

5. do the Windows install (be sure to choose the correct drive)

6. once installed, change the boot order to start from your SSD

 

(This is assuming you're Windows 10, the code for which is installed on your hardware).

ok so i have this sandisk 32gb cruzer blade usb? is that fine. is there a difference from this to a flash drive. and what do you mean by setting up the boot order to start from the flash drive, how do i do that

You realize the Cruzer IS a flash drive, right?

Yea that flash drive is good, just be sure there is no important information on it, as the installer you place on it will wipe that.

Are you familiar with the BIOS/UEFI of your motherboard? Usually you enter this by pressing DEL/F12 and you have to look for 'boot order', which is basically a way to tell the system "look for my main drive and if you found that, boot from it".

You now don't want it to boot off of your main drive, but rather the flash drive, so that's what you want to change. Of course once you're done installing you want to change it to starting from your SSD now.

so once i plug my ssd in, i plug my flash drive in with windows installed on it. i then turn my pc on and open bios. i then find the the flash drive and boot from it? then will it give me the normal windows installation. and once im on windows i should change the boot order to start from my ssd?

Yes.

Every motherboard is different, but from what I have seen F11 is the way you get into the boot menu for these boards.

No need. Download the media creation tool and let it create it for you. If that errors out, download the ISO and write it with rufus.

Incase Windows doesn't let you make it then you can use something like Rufus to do it. Windows doesn't make a bootable UEFI for me in the past.

Honestly, if you cannot do this.... get someone to help you.  I am not shitting you at all.  Your success % is very low as of this point.

In my experience the Windows Media Creation tool isn't very dependable. Also takes a hella long time and redownloads the full W10 iso every time you need to make a USB. I always use the WMC to download the ISO, then Rufus to actually make the USB since it's more reliable, faster, and I can do it multiple times without redownloading.

Done it a half dozen times now (making the USB installer drive) and it's worked every time.

 

Playing with ISO's for the regular user is just extra confusion and steps.

Not really for me for 1st time. I also need the ISO to set up Windows 10 VM as well so....
