i3 9100 vs R5 2600 for 7 y/o birthday gaming rig

Building my son a surprise gaming rig for his birthday.

currently debating an i3 9100 vs R5 2600 either chip plus decent motherboard is around $200

The wife has budgeted $6-800

That does not include a 1TB samsung 860 ssd, a 75hz 1080p monitor, or IO as he has a red dragon RGB (super important to a 7 year old let me tell you) mechanical keyboard and mouse.

likely to be paired with GTX 1660 (~$230)

16 gigs corsair or good brand ~3000 speed ddr4 $85

seasonic focus 80+ gold 450watt semi modular powersupply ($65)

inside a corsair 100D case ($50)

total ~$430 before motherboard and cpu

Note this will likely only be for a few years then he will inherit my 8700k w/ rtx 2080 when i build a new rig and this will become a HTPC

I am finding it hard to find many benchmarks of the i3 9100 so unsure of the 2600 vs 9100 for a few years for strictly gaming performance paired with the gtx 1660, which one should I get?

He plays fortnite, Subnautica, Heroes of the storm, and Overwatch

Are you shopping on USA? we could just do a PCPP listing but either ways the Ryzen 5 2600 is a massively better investment than an i3 9100F

Located in the US (FL).

Long term I am aware the i3 is inferior. only reason a 9100 is being considered is secondary life as a low power silent HTPC in ~2 years, and possibly better gaming performance short term when in service the next ~2 years as a 1080p child's gaming rig. (weird use case i know)

would be easier if i could find good i3 9100 vs 2600 comparisons in gaming but there is very little as far as articles on the 9100 that I have been able to find. it seems to be listed as performing slightly higher in gaming from what i have found but nothing title specific sadly.

The Ryzen 5 2600 is on a whole different level, it's even slightly better than the i5 9400F. But if you want to look for yourself an i3 9100f virtually doesn't perform much better than the 8100, so you can just look Ryzen 5 2600 vs i3 8100

Wrong - the 2600 is much better in games. The 9100 is a rebranded i5 7500 and it's HORRIBLE value by today's standards. It's not worth the money or even considering it for an HTPC is not worth as the Ryzen 3 3200G and 3400G cost the same or less and are better across the board.

For the price I would take the 2600. Yes I saw your post about using it as an HTPC, but the 2600 isn't terrible on TDP. That being said you are getting 50% more cores for the same price which will make it much more future proof. On top of that you can use it as an HTPC and maybe even a media server for other devices and still have some CPU power to spare.

Also if you want to shave off some money you can get a new RX580 for around 150. It would be a good choice for 1080p gaming for sure.

To be totally fair the Ryzen 5 2600 has the same exact tdp as the 9100, and we all know how intel mesures their tdps. Intel is a mess in power consumption rn

here is link to the the rest of the build. though seems liek the 2600 is just going to be better if the i3 is just a rebranded i5 will research it vs the 2600 x and likely pair with a MSI B450 tomohawk mobo unless there is a better pairing of CPU/mobo for ~2-300

What about this? Not great for TDP but it’s a beast for the money.
edit: didn’t need the 3600 MHz ram

another edit: @Epimetheus you’re right about the 450 watt sorry

will cross reference a 2700 had nto even thought about it. the second life of the PC though I do want a mostly passive cooled system but it looks liek the TDP is 65 watts there too. something else to consider. really appreciating the assistance!

2600 will live longer and if your 7 y/o ever decides to do some 3d rendering in his/her/it/helicopter spare time the 2600 will come in clutch.

The Aorus Elite is a great board for the price, that's my go to recommend for B450. If I may also suggest a different case, the Phanteks P350X Eclipse is a beautiful and highly functional case for the price, good airflow/ sleek RGB and nice tempered glass with good cable management.

dude that's bound to explode with a vega 56 and a 2700 on a 450w psu. Besides that'll be loud as hell

reason for the case is it matches mine (corsair 750D). He kind of has figured out he is getting a computer probably, I showed him some cases and he said he liked that it was a mini version of my computer kind of like he is a mini version of me (his words not mine). Though my wife/his mom does not want tempered glass windows, prefers acrylic in case the kids knock into it or something. probably passing on a vega card too as i want low tdp hence 1660 being pretty much on the already decided list.

The problem isn't sustained load, it's Vega's transient pull - realistically,

The build is pretty fine but I also think that at this point the Vega56 doesn't make much sense for purchasing, GTX 1660 Ti will be more power efficient and just as good if not better at gaming.

I'd go like this:

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-Core Processor  ($133.00 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: ASRock B450M PRO4 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($69.89 @ OutletPC)
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport LT 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory  ($69.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Crucial MX500 250 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($39.70 @ OutletPC)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($79.89 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: Zotac GeForce GTX 1660 6 GB GAMING Video Card  ($219.99 @ Amazon)
Case: Thermaltake Versa H18 MicroATX Mini Tower Case  ($49.99 @ Amazon)
Power Supply: Corsair CXM (2015) 450 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply  ($54.99 @ Corsair)
Total: $717.44
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

But this is trying to find the best value without breaking the 700 bucks target... the ASUS ROG Strix B450-F is a terribly overpriced motherboard you're literally only paying extra for those RGB and ROG branding... I personally would never sacrifice value and performance for aesthetics, I prefer my games looking great on the screen than the metal running it personally.

that aoris does, but it is just a small bit. maybe not worth the $40 but really its still in budget and would make him happy he can "show off" (also being honest will look cooler in htpc though i will never admit that and blame it on the kid forever)

https://pcpartpicker.com/user/G00fySmiley/saved/Z8wjpg

and yea totally a waste of some $ for RGB probably, but he did say when i build him a pc he wants "dat rgb" (he watches linus videos with me and says he takes dat rgb liek seriously) no need on storage as already have a spare 1 tb samsung 860's floating around and 2 or 3 WD black 4 tb drives if he needs it.
