Gamer muscles?

DaltonM

I have a really small sample size, but I feel like gamers, particularly those who have used controllers for years, have pronounced hand muscles by their thumbs.

Try it now, simply squeeze your thumb in it's hand, and you should see a muscle extrude. I find that non gamers don't have as large of a bump when they do this. I have attached pcitures of this phenomenon. Try it yourself, as other people, gamer or not, and report back.

Am I crazy? Or do you develope muscles from twiddling sticks??

It looks you use your left hand for other purposes more than gaming.

I think you develop muscles since I hardly ever play on console and I actually find it somewhat painful to use a controller because it's fatiguing to my hands. Almost everyone else I know uses a console and not a pc though and they never experience thumb pain.

It doesn't depend on whether you 'game' or not. Its just if you use the muscle more and how much fat you have, simple as that.

Now we're being pedantic. Of course it comes down to using the muscles. I feel that gaming is the most common use for this particular muscle (set of muscles?) That's why I said gamer.

I just spent 25 minutes trying to find a muscle... didn't find a single one.

Hand, n. A singular instrument worn at the end of the human arm and commonly thrust into somebody’s pocket.

Indeed. If mine's there, it's hidden under a bunch of... Hand.

And I twiddle my stick a ton.

I don't use a controller really any more, but my forearms have some pretty cool definition from a combination of very low body fat and lots of typing

That's an F in the profile pic

When playing games using a controller you don't build muscles, not even endurance. The "exercise" of using a controller doesn't require your muscles to work hard. The way to build muscle is by tearing the muscle which then regenerates creating additional muscle tissue, to tear muscles you need to use heavy weights and low repetitions. Unless you have a special controller which weighs a few kilograms and the buttons and thumbsticks require a lot of force to press and push them then you don't really build muscles. So the look of your hand is not purely dependent of whether you play with a controller or not.
