New 21:9 1440p Ultrawide

Go to solution Solved by Mr.Humble,

Hey everyone,

ultimately I decided and got the Acer Predator X34P.

It's 34", 3440x1440, 120 Hz (OC), G-sync, IPS, height, tilt, swivel, 4 port USB 3.0 hub, ambient lighting (bottom of the panel lights up in a color you want, very nice for night gaming) and the price was a hair over $1000, so around 900€.

I ultimately decided not to get the 43" as that would ultimately be too big for my desk, and effectively I wouldn't be able to even have my laptop open on it.

I'm really satisfied overall, with only a slight gripe about the stand, which is too deep, making my new monitor sit around 5 cm closer to me than my old LG, and the fact that the curve is not as pronounced, at around 1900R compared to the LG's 1800R. However, these two things counter each other quite well ?

Thanks everyone for helping me make this decision, I'm sure this monitor will serve me well for years to come.

@Xiauj

INTRODUCTION / BACKSTORY

For the longest time I was trying to get my dad to use a higher than 1080p resolution display to ease his eye-impairment, until one day I set him up with my trusted LG 34UC88 and left for an exchange semester in Denmark.

The deal was: "If you like it and want to keep it, I get a new one, if not, you get something else".

I am proud to report that my dad has joined the Ultrawide Master Race... leaving me without a display. So I'm looking for a replacement, turning to you for advice.

CRITERIA

From most to least important

Must have

1. 21:9 1440p curved Ultrawide

2. 100+ Hz refresh rate

Nice to have some of:

3. G-sync
4. Height-adjustable

5. IPS

6. USB-C input

7. Thunderbolt 3

8. understated looks (not screaming "FOR GAMING")

BUDGET ~ USD 900 - USD 1100 (~ € 800 - € 1000) - note this is a rough estimate due to currency conversion (I am in the EU)

I was looking at these:

LG 34UC99
Predator Z35P

Predator X34P

Samsung C34J791

LG 34UC88 (the one I had before, only 60 Hz)

LG 34GK950G - A bit of a budget stretch

Appreciate any suggestions :)

The Acer X34 is always a great pick personally speaking, the LG 34GK950G sounds interesting enough as well... at this point I'll be honest and tell you it doesn't matter... all these monitors are on pair with each other nowadays and it falls more to branding and aesthetics.

I remember thinking "Wow this looks nice, but it's too expensive" when the original one came out and I was in the market for the 34UC88... now the X34P is actually a good deal and the "upmarket" one is the new LG 34GGK950G, mentioned also by @Malibrew.

AFAIK it's a really new monitor too. Do you think I'm better off reaching deeper into the pocket? I expect to be able to use it for at absolute minimum 5-6 years.

God no, I wouldn't pay $1400 for an Ultrawide.  We have nothing that can push that really yet with decent settings still.  Upgrade to it in a few years when it's tried and tested over time and the hardware is there to make use of 144Hz 1440p UW.

I see your point, and admittedly it is signifficantly above the budget that I have for... 20 % increase in refresh rate and 30 % increase in brightness at a price 30 % higher than the next most expensive thing (Predator X34P)

Thanks for your input :)

These are the widescreen monitors I have had in recent weeks, (Love 30 Days Money Back Guarantee :) )

-Acer ED347CKR
-BenQ EX3501R
-Asus ROG Strix XG35VQ
-Samsung LC43J890DKU
-Samsung C49HG90 Zwart

The Acer quickly fell off due to bleeding, read alot that the Predator also have this problem alot.

Benq vs Asus.

Asus have better black, Benq its colors are not as similar as the Asus across the entire width of the screen,
the Asus was actually very good and decided to keep it.

Then a friend of mine showed his 49 ″ and was curious about it

So I ordered the Samsung 49 ″, it was way too wide for me and the 1080p was meh.

Then i saw a 43 ″  and ordered that one

WOW what an image, it is much more fun to play on a 32:10 compared to a 21: 9 the extra width is nicer and not too wide compared to a 49inch,
it is slightly lower than 34/35 ″ 21 : 9 but it gives a lot more widescreen feeling, colors and black are also great on the 43″  Samsung, but no Freesync i gonne keep this one for a few weeks, send it back and gonne buy the Lenovo Legion Y44w-10, only 2 shops have it here so the price is high atm.

The 43″  is 3840 x 1200 vs 3440x1440 only 300.000 less pixels on the 43″ :good for your Gpu, i see no diffrence in dpi in my 35″  34400x1440p Asus and my 43″  3840x1200 Samsung, can recommend everyone to give 32:10 3840x1200 a try.

@vojta.pokorny Hi, Did you decide on a monitor choice from this topic if that's alright asking?

I just wanted to ask because I'm in the middle of monitor-shopping too, haha. I noticed that Me and You are looking for similar 'nice-to-have' features, lol. The only difference is that, I have a slightly lower budget. I've seen a monitor/model that's been popping up a lot and I think I might go with it (..despite the fact it has FreeSync and I have a GTX 1080 unfortunately :/) but yeah, it's still pretty cool that I found this topic! :D

Hi, I'm deciding between the AOC @jstudrawa mentioned and the Predator X34P, leaning a bit more towards the X34P due to creature comforts like IPS, USB hub, slimmer bezzels and nicer looks :D

The 43" 32:10 Samsung @Darkrunner mentioned looks interesting as well, it's at a similar price point to the Predator - basically trading G-sync for a wider aspect ratio and a built in KVM, which is something I definitely could take advantage of with my laptop...*

Damn you, monitor manufacturers, for making me choose between trade-offs at my price point! Why can't you give me all I want!

I will be making a final purchase decision in around 3 weeks - currently I'm still on my Erasmus - and I'll probably want to see the 43" with my own eyes if I can, but overall leaning towards the Predator the most.

Glad the topic is useful for other people as well and hope it helps you choose a good monitor for you! :)

*this can be achieved through software such as Symless' Synergy, in fact I think it might even be a better experience

Ok well thanks for the overall update anyways man! I appreciate it! ❤️

Hopefully You and I can find the right decision(s) lol.

Spoiler

If curious btw, I'm looking for most of these features:

Spoiler

A 3440x1440 resolution or close to that.

Would like to try 100Hz or more instead of 60Hz but 60Hz is still alright, I guess.

I'm using 3x FreeSync monitors currently with a GTX 1080 but wanna try for G-Sync if possible.

Would love to have an IPS or VA Panel.

Would also LOVE to experience HDR/HDR10 if possible; especially for editing/modelling/watching-films/gaming because of great colours/brightness/etc.

Not too bothered about the Response Time (ms) but want to keep it at like 5ms-ish.

  • 4 weeks later...

Sounds like a pretty good choice/reason(ing) to Me :D I'm gonna hold off on buying a new monitor for now which I forgot to mention on this Topic (My bad) but had mentioned in a status-update. So yea, gonna try and get one towards the end of this year or possibly next year though. Or.... I might choose something entirely different lol.

Have you tried watching films on the X34P as well as playing games on it? If so, how's it like?

Hello,

Im choosing a new monitor now too.

Atm x34p is priced almost 1100 eur here and its just overpriced.

I found Alienware (Dell) AW3418DW a good on with 34" IPS, WFHD, 3440 x 1440 pixels, 21:9, 4 ms, 300 cd/m² + G-sync Priced just under 1k eur - 988eur.

Seems like a nice deal, 34", 1440p resolution which is a nice thing as I always been on 1080p and also g-sync which should be useful.

Also

Samsung LC43J890DKUXEN

seems like an interesting one, even wider which could give some benefits but for that Im loosing 1440p (gettin 1200p still better than 1080p though) no g-sync

still 120Hz which is nice. Also panel is not IPS which was main purpose of my upgrade but TFT VA seems like a good alternative?

I got second AOC VA panel 32" monitor VA seems usefull when working on videos/photoshop so I enjoy it but how is that TFT VA vs IPS holds?

So overall in my price range selection is:

Samsung LC43J890DKUXEN -

cons:

no IPS, no G-sync, no 1440p

pros:

1200p better for gpu (gtx 1080ti should gold ok even on that wider 1440p)

wider 32:10 which gives pros in working environment

Cheaper, almost full 200 eur

Alienware (Dell) AW3418DW -

cons:

More pricey (though because of components so not really con.) 988eur vs 806eur.

IPS panel

G-sync

1440p

@vojta.pokorny , suggest any pros and cons for either of them, Im on the point to sacrifice g-sync, ips and 1440p to get that wide ass samsung :D but Im afraid of regret it later on.
