games like F.E.A.R.

snowman89

Are there any good games like F.E.A.R. that mixes horror and fps? I have played the latest Prey which I really enjoyed and kind of reminded me of F.E.A.R. in some ways. I would like to find more games like these, that are not zombie games or pure horror games but also have fps elements.

Thanks.

I've been thinking of metro series actually, are they stand alone or do I have to play them in order? If not which one is best? Dead space I've played some but couldn't get past the bad camera view tho...

They all follow the same story with the same character (Artyom). I've played through the first one and only played a little through Last Light (second game). I'm sure you could pick up anywhere and follow most of the story pretty easily, especially if you just want to jump in for the action and don't really care too much about the story. I think there was a recap at the start of Last Light explaining the basics of what happened in the first one. I just didn't have enough time to play through Last Light any further so I'm not sure how much of the story follows through and if there's anything you need to know from the first.
The games often go on sale on Steam or Humble Bundle and probably other sites as well. Keep an eye out for a sale and pick them up then.

The story in FEAR is kind of dumb... as is the case with most spooks games.

I would recommend STALKER, I've only played Clear Sky, which is apparently the least favorite of the series, but with some reasonable mods the gunplay is pretty enjoyable.

The Metro series starts with 2033, then Last Light, and they are a series. They're decent and fairly enjoyable.

Halo 1 and 2 you can get free basically. There's .exe's of Halo 1 and CE around, and Project Cartographer for Halo 2.

Dr. Historic Low has some games that should be excluded from "Horror/action FPS that isn't DOOM/zombies" Here's a resulting list of (what I consider to be) in that genre.

Rage

Singularity

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Series

Wolfenstein Reboot

7 Days is zombie survival game, having no story.

Alan Wake is a good story, but third person and the combat is more an annoyance. You play the game for the story.

Aliens Colonial Marines is a colossal shit show. Why you recommended it I don't know.

Alien Isolation as far as I know is primarily NOT a shooter.

Area 51 I know nothing about. Gman seems to think it pretty average.

Clive's Jericho is pretty terrible.

Dead by daylight is that online survive the psychopath game isn't it? Kind of the wrong genre. And again, no story.

Dead Island is a zombie game.

Dead Space is third person... and effectively zombies, though somewhat creative ones.

Doom he already stated he didn't like.

Killing Floor is an online wave-based effectively zombie shooter. No story again.

Dusk appears to be pretty DOOM-like.

Painkiller also appears DOOMy.

I didn't even know they original Prey was on PC. Good luck getting that.

Quake is DOOMy.

ResEvil -7, all games are third person. And I think 5 and 6 were supposed to be very mediocre. So you're with the first 4 games, which are old and clunky, unlike FEAR.

Serious Sam is DOOMy in a way.

The Suffering is third person... although one of them is available as freeware.

Unloved is literally based on a DOOM 2 mod.

"DOOM? never got into that personally" doesn't mean he doesn't like it. I stand behind all my recommendations whether they're perfectly centered to zombies, a story, "DOOMy", third person, etc, etc. I listed games similar to F.E.A.R. in some shape, form or fashion. I even noted that some of them may be in third person but that they're still great games to consider. It doesn't hurt anything to list the games I listed. Just because you may not like them doesn't mean someone else will not either. As for finding them, it's a breeze to find all these games, including Prey 2006. Sittin on eBay right now. Steam keys or the physical copy, your choice.

Left 4 Dead is NOT like FEAR or Prey. Neither is 7 days to die. It's not at all about what games I do or don't like. Saying he didn't get into DOOM pretty much means... he's not into DOOM.

Having "shooter" and "horror" in the Steam tags doesn't make it a similar game. Half the games you listed aren't anything like either of the games he mentioned.

Bioshock ....

Atleast the list wasn't wasted...

I'm not sure though, not being the shooterfanat here but wasn't fear praised for its ridiculous good a.i. that still stands as today?

Might as well try something like Mass Effect if you haven't gave that one a try ( 1,2,3 that is )

"I would like to find more games like these, that are not zombie games"

"never got into that personally I want a game with a good balance of story and action like fear or mass effect for example"

Your suggestions are DOOM, 7 Days, Left 4 Dead, Dying Light, Dead by Daylight, Dead Island, Dead Space, Killing Floor, Quake, and Serious Sam.

It's like you didn't even factor in the things he explicitly said he wasn't interested in. Don't paint me like a retard because you post random things that are in fact, not similar. Fear is to Left 4 Dead as Arma is to Portal. Arma and Portal both have "strategy" and "FPS" elements, but are not similar.

The STALKER series is a good recommendation because it's more tactics based, ala FEAR, and has a progressive story with characters you can interact with.

7 Days, Left 4 Dead, Dead by Daylight, Killing Floor, Quake, and to a lesser extent DOOM, Dying Light, and Serious Sam are poor recommendations because they are explicitly not tactical based shooters, ala FEAR, and have absolutely zero to very minor story.

Add in "not zombie games" and that knocks out half your list from the get go.

Jesus Christ, Microsoft Flight Sim X is a flying game, but it is not similar to Ace Combat 7, outside of having it be tagged with "airplanes."

The AI in fear is actually pretty basic, but it works well with the boxy corridors in the base game. I think the expansions had some more open areas where the AI starts to freak out.

I would recommend buying doom3:BFG edition on some steam key card site. It will cost you around 5 us dollars and doom 1 and 2 are included too... It is still fun to run through the corridors..
