Samsung Introduce "vertical" TV

A regular TV can already do this if hooked up to an external source (Eg: A PC). That's literally how every Portrait style Commercial display works.

 

For example, at work we have a large (I'd guess 40", but I haven't measured it) touch screen "kiosk". It's literally just a touch screen large display, turned sideways, with an embedded PC.

 

We even replicated the entire setup using off the shelf components for 3x more kiosks using smaller 24" touchscreen displays.

 

This is "cool", but I'd also rather smartphone users start recording video in the proper orientation rather than having to flip a TV sideways :P

 

Personal preference. If this became a standard feature of every TV (meaning every TV had portrait swivel), that'd be okay, I suppose.

 

Business class desktop monitors have had this feature for literally decades.

The question is whether the processors in phones are able to take a full 12MP sensor readout while recording video.

 

I’d wager yes, but I’ll have to see, since my X-T3 is able to do a 24MP readout whilst in 4K30, but takes a small crop in 4K60

I thought the TV would actually flip, like a motor turning the screen around, so you can never get black bars.

Linus must be at the project meeting for this. True innovation, but doesn’t look like Windows supports this.

At least Samsung is trying to do something outside the box. I thought folding phones were stupid until i saw one, now Im convinced everyone, especially women in their purse, is going to have one one day. Maybe the vertical TV is something too

Yea I saw them ages ago, may no longer be a thing but I have seen them. Currently I use a 2.40:1 projector screen with moving shutters on the sides, those and the surrounding material are black felt. I don't use an anamorphic lens I just use the projector 2.40:1 zoom mode and the black felt takes care of the excess black bars on the top and bottom, for 1.78:1 content I put the projector in to that zoom mode and move the side shutters in so there isn't grey screen material showing (it really does make a huge difference).

 

Very much like cinemas do, they also block the excess top and bottom at the lens for 2.4:1. Anamorphic lenses have problems with image distortion and focus shift so it's actually better to avoid them, even though you lose a bit of screen brightness in 2.4:1 zoom mode.

So... am I wrong in thinking this is just a TV that has been rotated 90° with a fancy soundbar glued to the bottom?

Because I can cast my phone screen to my TV, it also has a slideshow mode for photos, and I can play music through it, doesn't that just make it a regular old smart TV?

 

Also, who doesn't have their TV wall mounted these days?
