Best Quiet cooler for AMD FX 8350?

Fr1tzB0t

I have a system with an AMD FX 8350 that I got for 65 bucks off of Amazon. The stock cooler runs very loud. I don't have much of a budget, so something like 80 dollars or less would be preferred. This is my first system build so I'm completely new to computer coolers.

Specs on this Rig:

AMD FX 8350

4 Gb of DDR3 Ram

Asus GTX 750 Ti Strix

80 Gb HDD (Working on Upgrading this)

Might as well get something nice, you can carry over a good quality cooler to your next build.

The dark rock 4 comes to mind. Quiet and effective.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

PSU quality issue. Not surprised if it's currently powered by a 300w max burst power draw PSU

Oh here we go again. The FX hate brigade are in town making noise telling us the world will end if we buy FX cpu's and a meteor will land on our house tomorrow. He's bought it so we need to help him. He's asking about a cooler for his cpu, not a new cpu.

I feel sorry for you Fritzbot, yes you didn't make the best decision ever, but there's nothing wrong with buying FX. I have an FX 9590 and got the FX hate brigade coming thick and fast as soon as I posted a few sentences a few years back. Don't listen to em.

Anyways... onto the actual question (yes I'm going to answer it unlike some on here who answer questions that weren't even asked). I use an Noctua NH-D15 for my 9590, that is whisper quiet so I'm giving Noctua my vote here solely from personal experience. The NH-D15 is slightly over your budget so we'll need to look a little lower. If you want to go Noctua and don't mind the looks of it, go for something like: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/DMjG3C/noctua-cpu-cooler-nhu14s

Or you could go for some of the others that have been mentioned above (Dark Rock 4/Cryorig H7). Those are good options too.

Also, I'd make sure you've bought a 970/990fx mottherboard for the 8350. You can run it on some of the lesser boards below that but it really isn't recommended.

He bought from Amazon. He might be able to return it. And that wouldnt be a bad idea if he can afford getting a 2200G or 1200 instead.

It's already in a system completely assembled, I'm not looking for people telling me to switch to ryzen, which I should have done, I know, I'm looking for a decent cooler.

based on current posts, I'm thinking a dark rock 4, Noctua NH-D15, or Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo

In that case, i have the 212 with my FX, still noisy for me.

The noctua is a good option.

Also, other than the facts that they run hot, use a lot of power, and are old what else is wrong with an FX?

they aren't fast in games (poor IPC and bottlenecking north bridge), high core count models tends to blow up crappy 4 phase heatsink-less boards even at stock.

As for cooler, I'd look used. Arctic Freezer Xtreme, Cooler Master V8 GTS, Deepcool Assassin II and Neptwin v2/white. Spare money goes to an SSD

Are you using the TG or non-TG version of the case? The TG doesn't have the same side panel bump which might mean less clearance for the cooler.

I believe I would be using the Non-TG, it does have a bump on both the glass side and the other side.

Macho Direct is good: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/TsL7YJ/thermalright-cpu-cooler-machodirect

I assume the correct way to quote is to click the arrow underneath a post.

I think the format got messed up because I edited it afterward.

  • 5 months later...

Let me say you're not alone in 2019 with an FX cpu. :-)

And I'm still very happy with it. :-)

Yes there is better, but there will always be better if you wait some more...

I have also been looking for a better cooler, but I see that all coolers mentioned here are NOT downward blowing.

I also have an FX 8350, and I use the stock AMD Wraith Max cooler on it (which is downward blowing).

Quite ok and silent, as long as you don't push it too hard and don't overclock.

(I use this system mainly for Lightroom by the way, and for some gaming. And I also have my "cold storage" archive hard disk sitting in this system.)

I read everywhere that sideways-blowing coolers may be a problem for the VRMs getting too hot.

So, I am looking for the best downward blowing cooler for the 8350... or another solution for the VRMs.

I don't see how you could point a fan towards the VRMs when there is such a huge tower cooler on the CPU...

My mobo is an Asrock 970A-G/3.1, which does have cooling fins on the VRMs.

I think this is a very high quality 970 mobo... it even has an nvme slot, so quite modern.

But so with VRM cooling fins, is in that case a downward blowing fan still the best option in theory? Or do the cooling fins make a downward blowing fan unnecessary?

My system:

AMD FX 8350 (not overclocked)

Asrock 970A-G/3.1

32Gb DDR3 2133Mhz

Geforce GTX 1060 6Gb Founders Edition

512Gb nvme SSD - Adata S11 Pro (for software)

980Gb Kingston A400 SATA SSD (for data)

4Tb Hitachi SATA HDD ( for archiving/backup )

So if anyone knows about a downward blowing cooler which is better than the AMD Wraith Max, please let me know.

Greetings to you all;

Carl

I would avoid spending too much in the cooler unless you plan to re-use it in the future, but 80 dollars is enough for some of the best.

Personally, I would recommend something like the Be Quiet Dark Rock TF, due to the fan orientation: FX-8xxx chips tend to be hard on the VRMs if you push them, and having a top-flow cooler will save you headaches or the trouble of fixing a VRM fan by yourself, especially if you didn't get a top-of-the-line 990FX motherboard.

I'd also check the used market, I got one for EUR 45 a couple of years ago.

What I find funny is the assumption that you can sell what sucks for X and get something great for X+0.01, and the performance will be dramatically better. Like, there's supposed to be someone out there willing to pay what you just said it isn't worth :P

He got the system for 65, so it's only reasonable to assume $65 is all he'll get by selling it.
