BOINC Pentathlon 2019

Go to solution Solved by jakkuh_t,

Seems like the easiest way for most people to help out is in the Marathon.

This involves downloading BOINC, selecting the "World Community Grid" project, and then selecting the sub-project "OpenZIKA".

1. Download + Install BOINC (https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php

2. Open BOINC and click "Add Project"

3. Select the "World Community Grid" project, and then click on their website url. (https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/discover.action)

4. On their Website, click "Join Now" at the top left or right depending. Enter your information and Register.

5. Once presented with the Sub project selection, choose "OpenZIKA" and click next. It will download a program, but you don't need it.

6. Go back to the BOINC app and click "Next >". Login with the World Community Grid account that you just signed up for.

Your BOINC app will now benchmark your system, and then start running.

BUT, you still need to set your team to the LTT forum one.

7. Navigate to the team selection page, and login if you aren't already (https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/team/viewMyTeam.do)

8. Type in "LinusTechTips" in the "Contains:" field.

9. Click on the "LinusTechTips_Team" result that shows up. Once the page loads click "Join Team".

You will now be BOINCing for the LTT team :D

This is the easiest way to help out the cause, but there are more beneficial / advanced ways to do so if you're interested. Refer to the OP for more information.

Yep, ID is based off email.  Always best to use the same email for each project.

Was the CC file, not exactly sure but ended up just getting one from someone else and that worked.

Ah, ok.

I will make sure next year to add an extra troubleshoot section with that issue added.

Sounds good, although not many people run multi-GPU these days.

Agree, the average user don't usually go beyond one GPU.

At least have it for the few folks, like ones that do F@H, that do have multi-GPU setups.

xD  I still got a few GPUs myself.  But, I'm a hoarder of hardware.  Darn GTX2060 on EVGA B-Stock been tempting me of late.

Though, eying a 6700K on another forum sales area and those two NVMe SSDs I saw as well.  :I   Stares at CPUs....hmmm, up to six of them.  Hmmmmm.

O nelly, I may hit 3mil in WCG this year.  Woot!

Capture.PNG.ca2e459fe76c70126479884ecd20ce7c.PNG

I actually need to nab some more DDR4 RAM.  Saw a 16GB Sammy B-Die kit going for 140 bucks on another forum.  I may nab those.

I like dual card configurations because it leaves enough lanes for NVMe drives and multi-port 10Gbit NICs which is a wonderful combination and excuse to have an NVMe SSD.

I have no need for such things, I'm a folder. Think it runs on an old SATA II HDD.... should probably grab a cheap SSD but they takes money away from my cards... I mean the case I literally found in a skip and has had the internals gutted, the front has two 140mm holes milled into it for fans .. I'm cheap okay...

Just popping in to say I still don't really have a clue how this all works and what's going on but I'm seeing all 6 cores of my i5-8600K do something so... Good job 8600K!

Still can't seem to get my BOINC stats to load up on the BAM website, but hopefully I'll be able to see stats soon and apply for the contributor badge.

Very nice.  ?

I hopefully will get my 5960X up here soon.  Just manage a deal with the chap selling the 32GB DDR4 Sammy B-Die kit.  Plus, got two NVMe drives I am nabbing as well off another chap.

May say crap it, nab that GTX2060 off EVGA B-Stock as well.  :P   Probably should sell off the GTX960 and GTX1070 at this rate to recover some funds.

All 6 cores running at 4.8GHz is quintessential of what team blue can do, gotta get that high gigahertz.

On average 40 minutes to complete a BOINC task for each thread sounds good to me, I think? I don't have anything to compare it to. :D

I'm not knocking the silicon, but come on, I can't see it having hyperthreading taking away from the clock speed.

Intel had to handicap the 8600K to give the 8700K hyperthreading, obviously. Classic Intel marketing.

Probably something to do with cooling and TDP.

Then again, I'm not even sure what Intel was thinking when they released those i5s.

Yeah, is you can make the cores do less they don't produce as much heat, that way you can make the clocks higher!

Yay, let's just underutilise the silicon...

For the average person out there, six cores are probably fine as is.

xD  Not like us nutty selfs that like to throw everything at a poor computer.

Hopefully this time, I don't kill this 5960X I just got.  It going under water like the previous one.  Buggers get toasty at higher clocks.
