Asking for a friend? (air or liquid cooled)

SGTechGamer

My friend Mark lives in a hdb (public housing) and he doesn't have air conditioning, singapore can get pretty hot and he's asking if is it advisable to go liquid cooling or stay with air cooling as a better option for his new ryzen build.

I'm not too sure so I'm asking you guys.

i dont think that adding watercooler with big rad would make your ambient room any differrent.i mean it would but its so small and i dont think it will help his heat problem that u are talking about..go with air cooler..its cheaper and you dont have to worry about leaking.

He plans to use his old case to build his new system (elite 130)

The chip doesn't produce less heat because of a better cooler; the cooler simply is better at removing the heat making the chip appear cooler (but really you're just 'throwing' more heat into the room).

LTT did a video on this (which I hope I am paraphrasing correctly):

Air cooler. If your AIO leaks(extremely unlikely but still possible) the local distributors don't deal with the warranty, you'd have to contact the manufacturer, and including shipping time etc. it could take even 2 months to get your replacement parts and coolers.

I have the temperature sensors in my case which came with a Corsair Commander Pro, even though it measured around 34-35C ambient my parts are fine since i have a lot of airflow and a good cooler for my cpu's heat output(cryorig h7 for a 65w i5 8400).

Which air cooler depends on what CPU he's getting and the airflow he's getting in the case.

Chips actually do release different amounts of heat while running at different temperatures (although this is normally a negligible amount) with cooler chips releasing slightly less heat. IMO (and for any real purpose), it doesn't matter at all in his situation. Just go with air-cooling. It's easier and cheaper.

unless he plans to mount the radiator outside the room there will be no difference.

much much easier in the event of a leakage. RMAing parts in singapore is already hard enough, but if with an AIO it's even worse. I had a friend who used the 2700x's stock cooler in a case with pretty bad airflow and he still manage to boost to max turbo freq, just that he was hovering around 89-90C. He's going to upgrade to an AIO since he wants to overclock though

The R5 2600 doesn't give out much heat at all. Just get a Cryorig H7, it'll be more than enough since it manages to keep my i5-8400 at max 60C. A Hyper 212(any variant) would work just as well too. Remember to try bargain for parts ? (don't lowball, aim for small reductions in price and maybe a 5ish% discount on GPUs, CPUs and motherboard)

EDIT: Just realised you were using a low profile case. In this case the Cryorig C1 should cool the 2600 sufficiently too, just make sure it has enough airflow(dont put the case in a shelf or something, make sure it's in an open area.)

I don't think his elite 130 will fit a 212

Yeah didn't see the case, my bad. He's restricted to only small form factor cases?

I have an Elite 130 case with a little system in it, the most important thing to keep the system cool is to get the hot air out of the case and get cool air flowing in, being that there's only a single 120 fan at the front that is going to be very important. A good front fan will let even the stock cooler work well enough for the R5 to run safely and boost well enough. Switching to a water cooler means that front 120MM fan is now doing double duty and would be either sucking warm case air from the GPU through the CPU cooler or it would be blowing warm CPU cooler air into the case to heat up the GPU, neither are ideal situations. Externally mounting the water cooler radiator on some stand offs and keeping the case fan as a case fan to get cool air to the motherboard and GPU would be the ideal situation.
