Intel core 2 Quad or Quad-core Xeon?

I want to build a very cheap gaming system , because money is not so great. I found an old Computer with a Asus p5ql se , an intel core 2 duo (doesn't specify which one) and 2gb of ddr2 ram , without a psu or a HDD , which I happen to have ( a VS450 white and an 120gb SSD) for 20€ , and a 750 1g for 40€ which is negotiable (I live in Greece , so prince are inflated a ton). If I exchange out the cpu for a Q6600 or a xeon , and get 8gb ddr2 ram off of eBay , will I have enough just to play some esport older games , like csgo? Thanks to everyone who helps!

I would say run it with the core 2 duo to see if performance is good enough, and you can put the money you would have spent on the core 2 quad towards something much better down the line

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

It should work for the basic needs you have, but it's outdatedly outdated even for the outdated standards.

From a scale 1 to Internet Explorer , how outdated is it ? Also I am not looking for a new machine in any way , just something cheap to have at least.

C2Ds are basically obsolete for everything except office work. Get a C2Q and OC the crap out of it, then, if you can, throw in something like a used 750TI or a new GT 1030.

The q6600 was and kind of still is a great budget CPU but the single core performance is heavily lacking, have you checked LGA 1366 prices in your area? you can get a great x58 CPU for super cheap in the States

Yeah , in greece we either have new stuff like Ryzens wich are overpriced , or really old stuff like 775 which is also overpriced . Talking about used market always.

depending on which games you want to play, you may want atleast a quad core. Maybe check out the miniumn requirements online to see what you need to run the games you want to play?

Yeah, OP, if i were you i'd look for an older business class machine between 2011-2013 and then just slap low end GPU in there.

The q6600 is fine for older games and normal use, but even windows uses pretty much my entire CPU nowadays

Like the gurus said above, a 750Ti is perfect for a core 2 quad OCed to hell and back.  We have a Core 2 Quad 2.4Ghz with hard disk drive and 8GB RAM.  It is soo freakin slow its not even funny.  It kills me to use that thing.  I installed Linux on it and my nephew uses the PC, he plays flash games so its fine.  Running games you must take down resolution to 720p or something.

Cause its basically the same speed as windows 7. WIndows hasn't really gotten slower over time, and windows 10 is often faster than 7.

that was a good idea maybe a year or so ago before they went full bloat because it was better on older hardware compared to 7 or 8.1, but not now

with a core2duo you'd have to go with windows 7 these days

^that plays GTA V

normal settings, 1280x1024, 40-50fps online and 30fps singleplayer

dont underestimate what old hardware is capable of, just because its old doesnt mean its entirely obsolete, its just not ideal anymore to be running anything lga 775

I know that 775 is not ideal , but thats what the money says

Your right...….  Yes 8GB will be nice, 4GB wont handle the OS and apps on top of it.  But ya every guru here will attest to the fact that you should put a SSD in there and it will bring the Core 2 to life.  8GB RAM minimum as well.

For CS:GO, probably not. Give it a go, but plan on jumping to a Q6600 or a Xeon (if your board supports them).

nah, we're talking literally multiple gigabytes of ram usage in difference

thats important when the hardware in question is a core2duo and a finite amount of ram, 7 will be significantly better for this

huh? Windows 10 idles at like 1 gb of ram, anything past that is the stuff you install, and thats the same on windows 7. And windows 10 has things like memory compression that helps with systems that don't have much ram.
