AMD Wattman Reset After Failure - That Never Happened

Anomnomnomaly

New build about 10 days ago, it's been running like a dream with no real issues that couldn't be solved with a tweak here and there to bios settings.

But everytime I boot up, I get a notification from the Radeon Settings that Global Wattman settings have been reset after a system failure.

Except no system failure has ever happened... System shuts down perfectly every time and reboots just fine.

I'm also getting notifications to install a 'new' update 19.1.1... when I have 19.1.1 installed.

Just an RX 580 8GB.

I just did a full uninstall and clean install of 19.1.1 again, and also downloaded 19.1.2 which came out today... So we'll see if there was something screwy with the original install.

i have recently started having problems with my MSI RX580 8G card, after 18 months of trouble free gaming its falling over almost every time i game, windows was showing display hardware/driver issues and wattman was resetting after every crash, even though i was not changing any settings. so far Scan uk have had my gfx card cpu and mobo (at the same time) and they are not finding any stability issues or crashing, changed just about every other pc component so far, fresh windows install and the like, so was hoping there was a driver issue out there we did not know about.. should get everyting back tomorrow for more testing.. the joys

Well, booted the PC this morning... and got the same message once more 'Global Wattman settings have been restored due to unexpected system failure'

No failure has occurred... Fresh, clean install of everything. Games have been runing smooth as silk and I've not had a single game crash on me with this new build. I don't even 'USE' the wattman settings.

I tried researching it, and all I can find is loads of others reporting the same thing but cannot find any solution.

I have a MSI RX570 8GB OC and am having constant crashes now as well as the WattMan warning now that I went to 19.1.1

Here is issues I am having:

Ryzen 7 1700x
ASUS ROG Strix B350-F
Corsair Vengeance lpx 8gb X 2 at 3000
Corsair CX750 PSU
MSI Armor RX 570 8GB OC
1TB HDD
Now a clean install of Windows 10

Hello,
I recently did a Motherboard, CPU, and RAM swap and had an R9 285DD 2GB instead of the MSI card. I then upgraded the GPU to the MSI card and over the course of 30 days I had small issues flaring up that seemed small at first but now for playing any type of game is unusable. At first whenever the pc was sleeping and then I woke it, there would be white snow for a split second when the monitor would come on and then the desktop would pop on and there would be no issues. I would be playing games, Witcher 3, for a couple of weeks and no further issues came up. I then got Far Cry 5 and then I start to have crashing issues. It seemed to resolve after turning off anti-aliasing and when I overclocked the cpu thru Ryzen Master to 3.9 at 1.375v. Now two weeks later any game I play auto crashes after barely 5 minutes of play and sometimes it crashes at the option screens. I had one instance of pc crashing while streaming a movie(white screen). Most of the time it black screens with no response or activity from the mouse. It also green screened after rebooting the pc.

I didnt do a fresh install of windows at first thinking they are both AMD builds it would be ok.
I then did a reset of my pc and re-install windows 10 thinking the instability i'm seeing is that.
When that didn't work I just did a clean install Win 10 and the display issues are still happening at a higher rate.

I downloaded a gpu monitor and temps are at 35C and load is not high at all, it does jump around but nothing that I saw thats concerning.

I was just wondering do I just have a bad GPU? Is there an issue with the RX 570 line of GPU's?( I hope not, I just bought an XFX brand RX570 8GB)

Any ideas?

Try a clean install of the 19.1.2, I've had issue with 18.2.2 and 19.1.1 but have gone to 19.1.2 and I don't see any more problem. The issue with a toast message prompting a new driver be installed with 19.1.1 has been resolved with 19.1.2, also, Wattman setting seems to be working or have stuck (did a custom fan curve with Wattman and it seems to be working after reboot, previous drivers required me to manually set the fan curve again, and even then, sometimes it'd not work). I've had crashes with 'DRIVER STUCK' message with both 18.2.2 and 19.1.1. I used to use MSI AB to set fan curve, now I use it only for on screen framerate/CPU/GPU corespeed, temps and such.

Try uninstalling previous driver in Safe Mode using DDU, disable net connection before rebooting to install new driver after running DDU. AMD has, imo, had released a couple of pretty 'iffy' drivers in the 18.2.2 and 19.1.1, but I'm happy to report that 19.1.2 seems to be a pretty good one thus far.

Well... did a clean install of 19.1.2 and it's still doing it... and not only is it telling me wattman has been rest still... it's now telling me there are 'new' drivers to install that are older than the ones I just installed.  It's trying to revert me back to 19.1.1.

Starting to think that my next card will not be AMD again.

By a clean install, you mean you ran DDU in safe mode to get rid of previous driver, right?

I've not had this happen for a couple of weeks... and then it suddenly comes back when I boot the PC after being away for a few days... Next time I boot... it doesn't.

Totally random when it happens... and I've not updated the drivers for at least a month or so now.

I'm running into this problem with a 580 4gb atm, very annoying and nothing on the net seems to work for me. Just ran DDU in safe mode and fresh install of latest drivers (just the graphics and HDMI audio) not holding out much hope of it working.

First off was glitching on superposition benchmark, then black screens forcing hard reboot. On reboot the error mssg would appear "Default Radeon WattMan settings have been restored due to unexpected system failure" then nothing graphically intensive would run, just black screen and hard reboot again :(

Yeah no joy with the DDU and fresh drivers, just reinstalled W10 and an older version of the Adrenaline drivers to see if that helps.

i also have a RX 580 with 8GB from MSI and i get the same error.

It happens when i restart the pc - also there was no system failure...

I also reinstalled windows and have the newest 19.4.3 driver installed ... still errors ...

This is really frustrating ... has someone tried to write to AMD or something?

Don't know if you fixed your issue but the AMD 19.4 driver seemed to be super broken.

I get a BSOD when i try to launch doom with vulkan. Other games work with Vulkan and Doom works with openGL.

I just installed the RX 570 im using yesterday.

Edit: I have contacted AMD and if they offer any info helpful or not i will update it here.

I updated to 19.4.1 and haven't had the error come back... So I'm kinda reluctant to upgrade it again at the moment.

Did you make sure to fully clean out any old drivers?  I don't know what card you switched from... but when changing a card you should try and remove any remnants of the old one... Even more so if switching from team green to red.

Same issue here. Rx 570 Nitro+ OC edition

Experiencing black screen that forces hard reset every time I play PES or when I close PEA. Tried a clean uninstall using the Radeon application... Surprisingly, PES runs smoother but crashing still happens. I don't know what to do now. I will try the DDU thing though.

Temps are really normal. It can handle 100% load and not go over 75 max.

I don't think the GPU here is the problem, the drivers are.

Researched it in the net, seems like a lot of us are having the same problem. Looks like this'll be my first and last AMD GPU even though I'm using Ryzen 3.

You think Nvidia cards don't have any problems?

Try some earlier drivers like 18.x.x guys..

There's also an optional 19.4.3 driver on the AMD website if you want to try that.. I've been using it without any issues on my VII for 2 or 3 weeks..

If you're losing your last settings, just make sure you save the settings and when you restart the PC, just load the saved file.. There's a number of factors that can trigger the "wattman encountered an error and reset settings to default," or whatever it says..

If you're OCing your card and you're experiencing these problems.. Well, that's why.. Stop OCing, or lower your OC..

Sometimes my settings stay active and sometimes I have to reload the file.. Depends how I shut down my PC and if I access the BIOS or not.. Anytime I'm playing with my settings, before I leave the settings page, I save the file/settings as "test1a" or something to keep track of my last used settings in case it crashes..

I'm also having the same issues with crashing. Have tested my ram with memtest86 , replaced the psu and even installed a better cpu cooler. Still I get random crashes watching movies, God awful noise when it happens. I say , just don't buy AMD video Cards because they suck, hard core. I never had these issues until I switched from Intel to AMD. Never again! I don't care if AMD ends up faster than Intel or not. I should have kept my Intel and Nvidia stuff. I am running Windows 10 pre-release or Evaluation versions on both my AMD GPU rigs, sometimes, after an update, I cannot get Radeon Setting to launch. I'd get a message about driver version not matching the Radeon Setting launcher......really ticked me off to no end. I updated Windows to Build 18895.rs_prerelease.190507-2033, but before doing so, I uninstalled 19.4.3 and restarted my system. It showed that I had driver 26.20.11010.4 installed, but I couldn't find the Radeon Settings launcher, went to the Windows store to download and install Radeon Settings Lite launcher, it works with this driver. It seems to have updated Driver Model from WDDM 2.5 to WDDM 2.6 (at least, according to dxdiag)

Seems like amd is giving no other answer than what it says here: https://community.amd.com/thread/235037

So i wrote an email to the card vendor (in my case msi) ... i will update, if they have something helpful to say.

Update: they replied that they can't help me. And if i think the card is broken i should contact the dealer.

very helpful...

Purchased a Vega 63 Nitro+ a few days ago and getting the random lockups and blackscreen and then the wattman restore message after reboot.
Built an entirely new computer today with all new parts apart from the card and the same thing is happening.

It seems so random too, I can be running a stress test for 4 hours and it's fine, but suddenly I will be doing something trivial like checking my e-mail and it will lock up.
