Vega frontier edition ???

Go to solution Solved by Fire_Chicken,

Yeah that’s whats confused me too with the gpu z

Hi,

so so I got this graphics card and it looks like a vega 56 or vega 64 but it has no stickers of what it is on it. I install it in my computer and I install the vega drivers to see if it worked, it’s working but it displays it as a Radeon vega frontier edition with 16GB of vram. But from my knowledge I thought they did it in a weird metal finish in silver or blue. Could anyone maybe tell what this means cos it’s taken me by surprise. Has a weird tiny switch on it also.

I agree with Cadence, it looks like an engineering sample of a Vega FE (I'm assuming this because of the different shroud and the LEDs above the power connectors).

looks like what i remember the cards in the first ever peak of Vega we saw(CES 2017? really dont remember) looked like, someone could also have painted it idk

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

I work In an apple based 3rd party repair store and someone was looking to sell it to us but my manager didn’t want to buy it, but he let me do a private deal with that person on my break. I didn’t know if it worked so I bought it as a decoration for £10. Turns out it works so yeah

Looks good, but one thing is a red flag: 8GB memory though it should be 16GB looking at other images

Looks like a regular vega 64. Those leds are normal for the vega stock cooler. You can see them in this review. Probably just a Vega 64 which has had the Frontier Edition bios flashed onto it. Maybe becuase that bios was better for mining?

It can't be a Frontier Edition without the 16GB VRAM. So just a normal 64 with flashed bios. You can use the lookup button and the bios tools in GPU-Z to work out if it's had the bios flashed.

If you got it cheap then might be worth selling on eBay before Radeon 7 comes out and used vega prices drop.

The FE BIOS was found to be better for mining, so yep.

Vega 64 with the FE BIOS flashed, or a really strange early engineering sample of Vega FE with 8GB VRAM.

Brands I wholeheartedly reccomend (though do have flawed products): Apple, Razer, Corsair, Asus, Gigabyte, bequiet!, Noctua, Fractal, GSkill (RAM only)

This is a weird BIOS that matches: https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/198367/198367

Unlikely to be an eng sample with the totally stock production cooler, usually there's a little sticker on there, might be worth looking for that.

Would I be able to flash it back and how would I find out the original bios?

In theory yes. I don't know how you would find the correct BIOS, although you could probably use any of the stock Vega 64 BIOSs.

Vega 64 should have dual bios, if you can find the little switch and put it into the other position then it will boot using the second BIOS which hopefully will be the stock BIOS.
