8700k vs 9900k for editing and streaming

Hey everyone,

 

I hope all of you can help me decide between these two cpus.

I am fortunate enough to be able to get either one for around the same price (not from the store, just some family stuff), but I am unsure which would be best for my case.

I am going to be streaming and doing some video editing and of course some gaming. (Not any professional video editing, just some Vegas Pro editing / Vegas Movie Studio)

I would of course pick the 9900k right off the bat, but I am unsure whether or not it will be too hot.

I will be running the 9900k at stock clock speed with a Dark Rock Pro 4, so how hot will it get while livestreaming games, video editing and gaming, and will it get too hot?

It won't be too hot if you don't OC it.

LOL why would he ever want to buy that if he can afford an 8700K or 9900K, both of which are significantly better...

You realistically don't need the i9 9900K it will be more CPU than you can purpose use for it, then again the i7 8700K while enough for every thing you said yourself you have means to afford some premium.

 

So grab the i7 9700K.

It's the better value option, the 9900K is faster at everything, but costs way more.

There's what the price looks like, comes with an alright stock cooler as well

The R7 1700 used to be $150 can still be had for that much.

 

12-16 core CPU options may come to AM4 as well.

First of all, you should be using quicksync or nvenc for streaming, so having 8 cores or 16 cores doesn't matter.

 

Second, both the 8700K and 9900K have much higher single thread performance than any of the AMD CPUs, which is important in gaming as well as video editing and most other programs.

 

Third, he can afford both of the intel CPUs. If he's looking for performance, and not price to performance, then the 9900K is the obvious choice.

It is literally the highest performing CPU that exists for gaming and almost every other task too (aside from rendering, which the CPUs with 20+ threads are better)

i hit 83C on blender on 5.2 1.36v, you won't pass blender temps during regular use.

 

btw, if you think a 1700 is good enough, i hit 85% usage on the 9900k the other day just playing path of exile on 144hz in a team map.

And what will it hit while streaming a less taxing game like Dead by Daylight or something (not really a taxing game on performance)

That's potentially limiting depending on the settings desired, but would also mean that a delidded 8700K is likely the way to go.

Or save money on Ryzen and not have to delid due to the solder and have an extra $150+ for pizza.

Also if you have the extra cores you can render while playing a game if you just split up the CPU, more so useful for handbrake though.

In premiere or Vegas? As in Vega pro 15(which is still $25 I think) Vegas uses 100% of the GPU and only 30% of my 1950X.

the way that GN calculates temps is generally cpu temps- room temperature, so if your room is 20C, and i'm hitting 70C when my room is 10C, you'll be at 80C, generally you'll be able to use 1.3v no problem, then it depends on silicon lottery how high you get.

Short answer to your question, 65-75C.

 

It feels so damn good to run a 9900k at 5.3, too bad i'm just scared to degrade a good chip with 1.36v

You are over-worrying about it's temperature, Dark Rock Pro 4 is one of the highest end coolers out there, just make sure your case is equally good in cooling performance you're set.

Yes they fixed thermal issues from the older Define C with it, it's a solid case if you're into it.

It sure does, you really can't go wrong with it however keep in mind that the best mainstream CPU in the market today won't really be of benefit in gaming alone without a powerful GPU to back it up... and all this high end hardware must be powered by a great PSU.

 

So just go with it if you're not missing out on these other departments.
