he Steam Link app is now available in beta on the Raspberry Pi 3 and 3 B+ running Raspbian Stretch

To install, run the following from a command line:

curl -#Of http://media.steampowered.com/steamlink/rpi/steamlink_1.0.3_armhf.deb
sudo dpkg -i steamlink_1.0.3_armhf.deb

To run, you can launch it from the Games menu, or run the following from a command line:
steamlink

The first time you run it, it will download the full app and create a desktop shortcut, and automatically update as needed.

Makes a whole lot of sense since VALVE discontinued their own STEAM Link hardware

I would guess so since they are willing to support the concept

I would also guess their hardware wasn't that much different than a Pi3

Is that why they're doing this. Like cause it is easy to port over from what they already had?

Original RPi could stream 1080p youtube videos and I was using RPi 2B as home theater for some time. No reason RPi 3B wouldn't be able to.

Original B idk, I had a Rpi B+ and a Rpi 2 B and they were pretty decent, the 3 is supposedly quite the upgrade from those even.

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

My 3 b+ can stream 1080p YouTube no problem so I think it should be able to run STEAM link. Tho I found that streaming 1080p YouTube makes the cpu quite hot. Passive cooling by the "heatsink" along might not be enough so a cooling fan case might be needed.

What's your secret? I can't get any of my RPis to playback any video content (streaming or local) smoothly even when windowed.

No secret at all. I kept everything at stock, no overclocking or other program running, and use the built-in chromium. It has some shuddering when entering or exiting full screen but other than that it's fine.

Neat, I need to give it a try now.

I pulled some old devices out to see how them compare against the actual Steam Link. :D

Yes to both considering Valve has publicly committed to supporting the Steam Link hardware with firmware and software updates.

maybe first we need a pi where the ethernet isnt connected to the same usb 2.0 link as all 4 usb ports.

you're actually better off connecting to wifi than to cable, because the wifi isnt on that terribly clogged usb 2.0 channel.

make sure it's powered properly, if the red LED isnt on, that means it doesnt have sufficient voltage coming in, and it'll go to low power state.

OOof. I didn't know they were all clogged up using USB2.

They really need to release a new Pi 3C for $50 with way more dank stuff.

I don't know, I had better luck with wired than wireless on the RPi 2 and 3 even with the 100Mbps limitation. It still doesn't compare to its competitors though. Network speed results here: https://jmd.cc/devices/

I'm colorblind so I'm just going to have to hope it's not red. :)

there's some "knockoff" pi devices that have their I/O much more sensibly laid out, but their software support is essentially zero.

and their price is close to small formfactor x86 stuff that runs circles around it. if i'd have to choose platform for a retro and media box.. i'd rather then get the x86 option than what's essentially just a phone without the phone around it.

It's called an ODroid C1+... same price, more powerful CPU, 1Gbps ethernet, support for eMMC storage, and it can run Android. :D

There should be a light always on and another flashing while the pi is powered. If there's only a flashing one, you might need another usb plug. Iirc it needs 5V 2A at least for the "normal" mode.
