Thanks for clarifying, I completely misread @manikyath's post. But that's extremely weird that a red light is "good" on a Raspberry Pi. That's pretty evil actually.

the choice of a red LED is debatable, given that the 3 states are as follows:

- undervoltage (<4.5 volts) : red LED off

- good (4.5-5.5 volts): red LED on

- overvoltage (>5.5 volts): red LED blinking.

 

i prefer power supplies with an adjustment pot, and adjust them where they're *JUST* below "blinking" when the pi is idle. the moment you put a mild OC and some heavy load on it, it normalises down nicely.

Call me when steam link works as well as moonlight until then I don't give a crap about steam link. It wasn't even worth the $2.50 it was selling for.

are you implying moonlight is anywhere near a decent experience?

 

EDIT: tested it on my raspberry pi 3, at stock clocks because the SD card with my OC has mysteriously broken..

 

works surprisingly smooth so far..

I've tested it out, it seems to work fine.

 

Raspberry Pi 3b+

 

Tested with steam controller, Xbox 360 controller and Wii U controller.

 

I ran Witcher 3 and Kerbal Space Program at a custom bitrate of 50Mbits/s via 5ghz wifi.

System specs:

4790k

GTX 1050

16GB DDR3

Samsung evo SSD

a few HDD's

Yeah Moonlight works great on just about anything. If I remember correctly back when it first came out they even had it running at 720p 60fps or 1080p 30fps on a raspberry pi 1 B+

it works, but the user interface (and thus, usability) is a special form of terrible.

Yeah it definitely needs a better ui on some of the applications the mobile app UI isn't bad.

They're probably doing this because their hardware didn't sell well but they still want people to use steam for streaming. I don't think the link had much in common with the raspi aside from being arm based, but porting over from what was most likely some version of linux shouldn't be much of a problem. The hardest part is getting the gpu acceleration to play nice.

Hmm... That's weird. Mine's just running at stock with wifi and hdmi out. What's your pi's version? Mine's a 3b+.

Also it should be A OK. You can OC a pi B to about 1400mhz on the core and 800mhz on the GPU memory and 350mhz on the SDmem with an overvoltage of 7 or 6. You will need a heatsink and 3 amp power supply

I hope you're talking about a 3b most of the Pi B can't make it past 1000-1100 (your 3b is a great overclocker if it's stable at 1400)

Check the documentation on the Pi. Anything over 2.5A is pointless. They are polyfuse limited.

Isn't all networking on the Pi 3 done over USB, and not natively through SPI, I2C, or native TX/RX pins? I would assume that is a crazy bit of protocol overhead to overcome, given that the Pi uses a rather limited Broadcom CPU. 1080p streaming is definitely pushing a Raspberry Pi 3 to its limits, since a significant bit of the processing load is  the USB protocol, in addition to video streaming and other networking overhead. Overclocking helps, but it only helps process the overhead faster; it doesn't trim the overhead.

 

I also recall that one has to buy a decoding license if one want to decode MPEG natively in hardware, and not in software. It's not terribly expensive, but one has to pay up for native hardware decoding.
