the new 2019 AMD processors and the Gigabyte X470 AORUS Gaming 7

So my question is - if i get a X470 AORUS gaming 7 wifi at christmas, will that be a really good motherboard for when the 2019 AMD processors on 7nm drop?

Should be fine as long as the Power delivery is good enough for the newer chips if they are 12 core +

Will be fine.

Power consumption will be smaller when moving at 7nm, so even adding more cores you'll probably still have a 95w..105w TDP processor.

 

The VRM on that board can probably easily do 250w-300w based on number of phases and heatsink, while on overclocked 8 core ryzen these days hovers around 160 watts. So there's plenty of reserves.

Asus has promised AM4 support through to 2020, I too bought a high end motherboard, with the Asus X470 ROG Crosshair VII Hero as an investment for when the AMD 7nm CPU's launch. That said if they are higher than 8+ core CPU's even with higher power draw a 7nm CPU, in theory, is more efficient.

For sure, any good mobo with solid VRMs like Aorus, Taichi crosshair.. will be more than fine with a bios update. At least thats what AMD been saying that the motherboards on AM4 should be complatible for years... we will see.

Whatever the equivalent of the Ryzen 2700x will have when the new processors drop. so bare minimum 8 cores

do you guys think i should upgrade from my quite old 4790k to a Ryzen 2700x with that motherboard, then sell the 2700x and swap in the new 7nm CPU? or stick with the 4790k right up until the launch of the new CPUs? It seems to be mostly a sidegrade (4790k to ryzen), although my 4790k definitely has not been treated ideally. my case is pretty dusty for example, and just in general it was overclocked for so long that its probably degraded at least a bit

I think it is worth the upgrade but if you want to get a new 7nm CPU then look at the previous gen Ryzen CPU's they can be found quite cheap ($180usd for a 1700), not worth the money for a 2700x if you are going to upgrade to a new CPU in a year or two. Also, an OC'd 1700 or 1700x is not far off a 2700x either.

So the flagship CPU? Rumours so far put the core count to be 12 or 16. Assuming each core draws the same power and 12nm Zen (because 7nm should have better efficiency, but then you clock higher and ruin that efficiency right away), it will be 250w or 325w (1.4v). The VRM on the Gaming 7 is only rated (like maximum current rating, with no regard to cooling methods) to do 400A, or 560w if you push 1.4V. If you actually care about temperature, then you should let it run 60% of the maximum rating.

 

This means the Gaming 7 can handle the 12 core just fine, but not the 16 core. If 7nm clock higher and draw more power than expected, even the 12 core can be a workout for the VRM.
