This isn't an answer to the repeal but it sure is a work around but one that seems to be more focused in crypto and VPN use and not about data security, what about logging?....what are the parameters for for random people whom decide to host a node?....and the dreaded latency associated with VPNs? It is interesting though.

I listened to it and all he did was use keywords like "it's a vpn", "nodes", and "you make money". Good marketing fluff but none of it makes any sense to me.

 

Does it remotely mine on your machine? And when you're hosting a node, what's to prevent someone from getting into your local network or do illegal things that leads back to your IP? It seems like it's secure for the user but doesn't sound so much for the hosts.

This does not circumvent the negative effects of the repeal as the ISP can (and probably will) throttle any encrypted traffic they can't identify.

It's probably something similar to TOR where every contributor is responsible for encrypting packets but can't read or trace them (in theory) and gets a small sum as a reward for their effort. The specifics will vary but that's probably the general idea. This wouldn't make you vulnerable to attacks to your local network in any way (someone is sending you a packet and you're encrypting it, nothing harmful can come from that since you're not executing any code). It might mean you'll be sending packets to shady destinations but since you aren't directly in control of what is being sent to whom you shouldn't be held responsible.

I'm wondering what will happen when people fight back and just DDOS the ISP's themselves. Basically, DDOS the closest hubs to them physically in a "if I can't have it, no one can" style attack.

 

Something like that is bound to happen sooner or later. That or the ISP's personnel will come under attack via doxxing or identity theft.

 

Not that I'm suggesting anyone treat these human scum like they are attempting to treat everyone else. That would be very illegal and no one should do it.

Even if someone did that it couldn't last for long. The only real way of fighting it would be mass plan canceling, but of course that would mean being willing to stay without internet for however long it takes.

Well, that'd be a quick way to get arrested. You can't disrupt them legally but they can disrupt you.

As I said, it's illegal.

 

Morally I see nothing wrong with it. Nor would I see anything morally wrong with someone stealing his beloved reese's coffee mug and holding it hostage, claiming that he's drinking too much coffee and it needs to be throttled to be fair to other coffee users.

 

All of that is completely illegal. Morally acceptable and would in fact delight me to no end to see it happen, but it's completely illegal and no one should do it.

So this is basically a coin specifically to use as infrastructure for what Zeronet is doing on top of Bitcoin? Cool I guess... but I don't see how it's fundamentally any different from Zeronet, or how it's going to offer any real tangible advantages over say etherium backed websites on the clearnet unless it procs updates substantially faster somehow.

 

And how does this solve literally *any* of the concerns people had with net neutrality? Even if this is P2P with a DHT solution like Zeronet has (using a Bit torrent DHT) that may make the end addresses unpredictable but it doesn't change how stupidly easy traffic of this type would be to identify and throttle or even block...

 

I'm not of the doom and gloom camp for net neutrality, but either way this really doesn't seem like it solves anything since you still need to connect to it through the good ol' internet. It has no infrastructure of its own and just piggy backs.

Depends on local laws. Either way I don't think amazon is held responsible for having, say, pirated content in its paid cloud service. Only megaupload was and that was pretty much illegal prosecution.

Are people just trying to find uses for blockchain so they can start a new mining thing now?  I guess if this does nothing else it will highlight those who are easily excited by things they don't understand as the rest of the community just asks why?  i hope no one jumps on robotcache or this.  The last thing we need are crypto currency administrators earning money from something we should have as a legal right in the first place.

Edit: Holy shit their "defense against child porn" is hilariously bad.

They have a system where content gets removed if it receives enough votes. People who have more of the stratum currency has more weight behind their votes. So someone could just dump a bunch of money and get a bunch of voting power.

Also, this is probably more centralized than the regular Internet is. All the DNS lookups seems to be controlled by whomever is behind this terrible idea. My guess is that DNS lookups is what is used to block content as well, and the creator has full control over that from what I can see.

 

There are very few details about this, but it seems like a horrible idea.
