GPU overclocking degradation over time ?

Hi! What do you think, what causes GPU overclocking degradation over time ?

 

In past i perfectly remember that my GTX1070 was able to easily get +120 MHz on core and +600 MHz on memory. But now it's unstable on that type of clocks. 

 

GPU temperatures are good max probably ~ 71C.

 

Could this be the main fault?

 

1. Latest GeForce drivers ?

2. Beta MSI Afterburner ?

3. Higher frequency DDR4 memory ?

 

I personally would bet on latest drivers but what do you think about it?

Get some thermal paste and thermal pads, open the card up, clean the dust, clean paste and remove older pads. Replace them, and close it back.

 

It's much more likely that this is the problem rather than softwares.

The card is pretty clean and max temp is just only ~ 71C. I think it shouldn't be the problem. Beside if i open my card i lose my warranty.

My GPU is not dying! I just asked what causes overclocking frequency instability over time. Card condition is good, clean and it's not even one year old.

power stability can affect overclocking, for example i had my computer running through a old ups, but when i tried to overclock directly from the wall i got a 30mhz boost, so simple things like changing the pc location in the house, changing psu, ect can affect your gpu's ability to overclock.

now i don't know how much voltage is nvidea pushing through those cards but it could be that its degrading a bit,

Some things which was changed in that time period is a lot of driver updates, ram oc from 2133MHz to 3000MHz, different version of MSI Afterburner (beta version now). And thats pretty much all. Other things are all the same as earlier when all worked fine when i overclocked my GPU +120 on core and +600 on memory.

Try EVGA Precision XOC, I had this sort of issue a couple of months ago where benchmarks and games would crash randomly even though the OC was perfectly stable weeks before. I uninstalled Afterburner and installed Precision XOC instead, I set everything the same and it hasn't crashed or showed any signs of an usable OC since.

It's very likely just a driver difference.  The voltage restrictions on Pascal won't allow for damage to be done with the stock voltage.  

If you're using the offset method of overclocking, you're not doing yourself any favors.  Learn how to use the voltage / frequency curve and profit.

Really? I have rarely heard of different drivers affecting how far you can OC a certain card.

 

You could always try older drivers, see if it makes a difference, but I doubt it.

I think it is more likely degradation of the GPU, or degradation of the power delivery from the PSU, or power delivery inside of the GPU. (when my PSU was in the process of dying, all of a sudden my OC was not stable any more either, because the power delivery to the GPU was not stable anymore). 

 

Try a different PSU, see if that helps stability.

 

You could try reapplying the thermal paste like someone mentioned, but your temps are fine, so that should not be the problem.

 

Which version of the GTX 1070 do you have? Which manufacturer?

I went from a 15 amp breaker to 20 amp and my card was more stable at lower voltages.
